Several Failed Interviews? It’s Time To Consider An Interview Coaching Session

By Perminus Wainaina

Job interviews can be daunting and how you perform on the actual day will greatly determine whether you’ll smile all the way to your new job or not.

You could have been the best candidate for that position you interviewed for last week but anxiety got the better of you and now you are on the next quest of job application.

Where could you be failing?

I coached a young lady recently who was battling with interview anxiety. She gets sweaty palms, loses confidence in skills she’s mastered for 5 years and loses content. These are some of the various cases that I handle and are major confidence killers in interviews.

If identified, candidates can easily get over these interview anxieties to their rightful job positions through thorough interview coaching.

Interview Coaching gives you firsthand experience in answering the interview questions with different angles to get around the questions. When you are well armed with this strategies, then you can be confident that fear is well kept at bay.

4 reasons why it is time to consult an interview coach

1. Employers severally contact you for interviews but never call you for the job

The whole point of an interview is to eventually get you the job offer because if you nailed it on paper, why not in person?

You keep coming out of interviews thinking that they went very well, only for you to be rejected time and time again.

To make matters worse, your recruiter is not giving you detailed feedback and you are not clear on where you may be going wrong.

If you are interviewing for what feels like an eternity with no job offers, something is clearly off and needs to be corrected

2. Anxiety attacks at the thought of the actual interview day

One of the biggest mistakes I find people making is not answering the question that is asked or giving out irrelevant definitions.

Majorly, rumbling is caused by interview anxiety which normally has no base. As much as nerves are natural, learning to control them becomes the only channel to interview success

3. Lack of knowledge on how to answer common interview questions

For instance, questions around salary expectation can either make or break your ability to receive the salary you deserve.

How you get around the answers showcases your expertise in getting around challenging obstacles at the workplace

4. All interviews you attend take shorter than the scheduled time

Have you ever wondered why your interviews always take a shorter time than scheduled compared to the interviewees before you? Did you assume this was normal since you just don’t talk as much?

Well, the several short interviews might be clear indicators that something needs to be done

So with that in mind, a good interview coach can spend one on one time with you to understand your experience, strengths and weaknesses and then coach you on how to draw these things out during an interview.

They train you on how to deliver exactly what the interviewer is looking for. A good understanding of these key things is a great leeway to nailing an interview.

6 Things I Look for When I Interview candidates

1. Be yourself!

I can’t say this often enough.  The several blog guidelines on how to best answer “tell me about yourself” did not tell you to cram the vocabularies and sentence construction.

You don’t have to sound like the great Martin Luther King to wow an interviewer. Be yourself. Natural wins

2. Be confident

The best thing you can offer in an interview is confidence in who you are and what you are willing to offer with great ability to learn.

Don’t spend time worrying if I think you’re right for the job and what I, as the interviewer, am thinking at any given moment. Just know who you are and help me see that.

3. Remain truthful

When interviewers ask about obstacles you’ve faced and how you worked around them or great things you have done in your years of experience, they are asking for a great story.

Make it interesting and real. The Golden rule of the thumb is to remain truthful. Never lie in an interview

4. Make sure you know your CV

What you have on paper should reflect what you bring into the interview room. Nothing gives you away than having to glance through your CV to answer a question. Understand your CV in and out because it just a written description of yourself.

5. Show me you understand the job you applied for and have the right skills.

You must be well prepared for the job you want to take up. If there are skills needed for that job that you don’t understand, look them up and incorporate them in your mental CV.

6. Finally, Answer my questions, don’t rumble around them.

Interviewers want you to answer their questions not find a way out of the questions. Give them just that. Avoid going round in circles or using very difficult words.

Final Thoughts,

If a few nerves surface, don’t worry, you will simply appear human and convey the message that this interview is important to you.

However, if you feel like it’s getting a little out of hand, we are here to offer you practical solutions through a one on one interview coaching
