How To Get A Recruiter To Find You On LinkedIn

By Selipha Kihagi

LinkedIn has become the place where employers and recruiting firms are scouting for job candidates because one can quickly identify with an individual’s skill and experience just from their profiles. However, with so many users on the platform it could be hard for a recruiter to notice you if you don’t contact them directly.

Sheila Cheptoo, a Recruitment Manager at Corporate Staffing Services says the key to being noticed is to have an updated profile that includes a recent photo, detailed work experience and content relating to your profession, this way you become easy to find.

Whenever there is an open position I am looking to fill, LinkedIn is one platform I visit to hunt for talent. For example for a Finance Manager position, I will search ‘Finance Manager on LinkedIn’ then visit the promising profiles to see qualifications. If they fit what I am looking for, I contact them about the position,” says Sheila.

So, how do you get recruiters to find your profile so you can be considered for an open position in their firm? Here are 4 tips to make yourself noticeable on LinkedIn.

How To Get Recruiters To Your LinkedIn Profile

1. Introduce yourself to the recruiter
This means that who you are should be the first thing the recruiter sees when they come across your profile. Just having your name and no description of who you are or what you do will not get the recruiter to click on your profile because they can’t tell if you are what they want.

To avoid this situation, complete the description section just below your name so recruiters can identify with you depending on your profession.

2. Use Keywords to improve your presence
Recruiters will not find you if you do not appear in searches and this is one of the reasons you may be missing out on job opportunities. That said, it is time to make use of key words. What does this mean? It means if, for example, you are in the Accounting profession you should include related words (Cost accounting, tax accounting, accounting payables) under various sections on your profile.

Include key words depending on your area of specialization and skills under the description section just below your name, your summary, job title, education and skills categories. These will ensure that you appear when recruiters search these terms.

3. Get people to recommend you
This does not mean you go talking to random people who don’t know your expertise and ask them to write something good about you, No. It works just like referees on your CV, only the recommendations here are in words and may compel the interviewer to reach out for an interview.

Talk to people you have worked with or who know you professionally and ask if they could recommend you.

4. Be Careful Who You Add To Your Connections
Do not just click connect or accept a connection for the sake of adding the numbers, instead, strategize who you want to connect to. Make sure that these people are in a position to help you out professionally, that you can reach out to them for reference or that they are either directly or indirectly connected to recruiters. This way your profile can appear as a shared connection.

Follow these easy tips to get noticed by recruiters and more importantly, include either your phone number or email address. Sheila says she has come across suitable candidates but cannot reach them in time because there are no contacts and they don’t check their Message box in time.
