Job Purpose
The Shovel Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating a wheel loader (shovel) equipped with two interchangeable attachments (blades/buckets) for loading, transporting, stacking, and feeding raw materials to the production process. The role ensures continuous material supply, safe equipment operation, and compliance with company safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Operation
- Operate a shovel/wheel loader fitted with two working blades (attachments/buckets) according to operational requirements.
- Load, transport, stack, and unload raw materials, finished products, and waste materials.
- Feed raw materials into hoppers, crushers, or designated production areas.
- Ensure efficient movement of materials within the plant and storage yards.
- Follow production schedules and supervisor instructions regarding material handling activities
Material Handling
- Maintain accurate material placement and stockpile organization.
- Minimize material loss, contamination, and spillage during loading and transportation.
- Ensure the correct type and quantity of materials are delivered to designated locations.
- Support inventory and stockyard management activities.
Equipment Inspection and Maintenance
- Conduct daily pre-start and post-operation inspections of the shovel and its two blades/attachments.
- Check fuel, hydraulic oil, engine oil, tires, brakes, lights, and warning systems.
- Report equipment defects, breakdowns, or abnormal conditions immediately.
- Maintain equipment cleanliness and ensure safe operating condition at all times.
Safety and Compliance
- Operate equipment in accordance with company safety procedures and traffic regulations.
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Conduct work safely around pedestrians, vehicles, and production equipment.
- Participate in safety meetings and training programs.
- Report accidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions promptly.
Qualifications
Education
- Secondary School Certificate (KCSE) or equivalent.
- Valid operator’s license/certificate for heavy equipment operation.
- Valid driving license class G
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of experience operating a shovel/wheel loader in a manufacturing, mining, construction, quarry, or industrial environment.
- Experience handling bulk raw materials is preferred.
Skills and Competencies
- Ability to operate a shovel with dual blades/attachments (two buckets/blades) safely and efficiently.
- Knowledge of material handling and stockpile management.
- Basic mechanical knowledge for equipment inspection.
- Good understanding of workplace safety practices.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet production targets.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Attention to detail and operational awareness.
- Ability to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays when required.
Working Conditions
- Outdoor and indoor manufacturing environment.
- Exposure to dust, noise, heat, and changing weather conditions.(PPEs provided)
- Requires prolonged sitting, operating heavy equipment, and working rotating shifts.
