Process Design Engineer Job Octavia Carbon
Engineering Jobs, Octavia Carbon Jobs.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Process Design Engineer to take a leading role in the conceptualization and detailed design of our core DAC process systems. This is a design-focused role where you will be responsible for translating scientific concepts and R&D data into robust, scalable, and cost-effective engineering designs. You will own the process from initial simulation to the development of detailed engineering packages. The ideal candidate thrives on first-principles design challenges and is passionate about creating novel systems that will define the future of our technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Conceptual & Detailed Process Design: Lead the design of new process units and systems, from block flow diagrams to detailed P&IDs. Develop and evaluate design alternatives to meet performance, cost, and safety targets.
- Process Simulation & Modeling: Build, validate, and utilize process simulations (e.g., Aspen HYSYS/Plus) to model complex unit operations involving thermodynamics, mass transfer, and chemical reactions. Use models to optimize designs and predict performance under various operating conditions.
- Engineering Calculations: Perform foundational process calculations, including mass and energy balances, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer analysis, to form the basis of the process design.
- Equipment Specification & Sizing: Develop process datasheets and detailed specifications for key equipment, such as reactors, vacuum systems, steam separators, heat exchangers, and pumps.
- Vendor Engagement & Management: Lead technical engagement with equipment vendors for specified equipment. Drive the process from initial inquiry through to technical bid evaluation, ensuring supplier offerings align perfectly with the process design requirements and project goals.
- Documentation & Deliverables: Originate and develop core process engineering documentation, including Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), process descriptions, and Control Philosophies that define the plant’s operational strategy.
- Commissioning & Operational Readiness: Prepare critical Commissioning and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Provide engineering support during plant startup and performance testing to validate the design and ensure a smooth handover to the operations team.
- Safety in Design: Proactively integrate process safety principles into the design process. Participate in and lead design reviews, HAZOP, and LOPA studies to ensure inherently safe designs.
- Integrated Design Collaboration: Collaborating closely with Process, Mechanical, Electrical, and Control & Instrumentation engineers to ensure a cohesive, fully integrated, and operable plant design.
- Technology Scale-Up: Collaborate closely with the R&D team to translate lab-scale data and pilot learnings into full-scale plant designs. Assess the risks and challenges associated with scaling up novel technologies.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering or a related discipline.
- 1-3+ years of experience in a dedicated process design role, typically within an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) firm, a technology scale-up company, Process Desing Engineering company or a central engineering group.
- Demonstrable experience developing a full range of process engineering deliverables, from PFDs and P&IDs to equipment datasheets and control philosophies.
- High proficiency with at least one major process simulation software package (e.g., Aspen HYSYS, Aspen Plus, Pro/II, UniSim, DWSim).
- Strong theoretical and practical understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat & mass transfer.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience supporting plant commissioning and startup activities.
- Experience designing systems involving vacuum technology, adsorption processes, or phase change dynamics.
- Proven track record of taking a process design from concept through to operation.
- Experience in the climate tech, carbon capture (DAC/CCUS), specialty chemical, or renewable energy industries.
