The VP of Investments is a seasoned leader who understands how investment strategies can effectively drive business growth and impact. They will lead capital deployment, portfolio management, and investment strategy to ensure Inkomoko allocates resources effectively to achieve its mission.

Key Roles & Responsibilities
Investment Strategy & Portfolio Management
- Lead the development and implementation of a mission-aligned microfinance and investment strategy, ensuring capital deployment supports Inkomoko’s impact, scale, and financial sustainability goals.
- Oversee a growing loan portfolio (projected to reach $150M+ by 2030), including product innovation, credit performance, and risk management across diverse entrepreneur segments.
- Build systems for data-driven portfolio management, optimizing return on impact and ensuring sustainable, equitable capital allocation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align lending with advisory services and local market realities.
Impact Focus: Business Growth, Self-Reliance, and Livelihoods
- Drive job creation, income growth, and community resilience by channeling capital to entrepreneurs, especially refugees and women-led businesses, through inclusive financial solutions.
- Ensure all investment decisions are rooted in Inkomoko’s mission to catalyze business growth and enable economic independence.
- Champion innovation in financial products that meet the real needs of underserved clients and foster long-term success.
Systems and Process Building
- Design and institutionalize strong internal systems and tools for portfolio monitoring, credit underwriting, and investment operations.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, using data, team feedback, and field insights to refine processes.
- Lead strategic initiatives to build scalable infrastructure capable of supporting growth across geographies and borrower profiles.
Team Development and Leadership Strengthening
- Lead and mentor a team of 200+ microfinance professionals, establishing structures that promote local ownership, performance, and alignment with organizational values.
- Cultivate leadership talent and support team members in professional development to meet Inkomoko’s ambitious goals.
- Uphold and model a leadership approach rooted in humility, purpose, and inclusion, building a culture that stands apart from conventional finance.
Regulatory Compliance and Institutional Structuring
- Oversee the development of compliance frameworks to support responsible lending and financial governance.
- Lead evaluation of potential establishment of a regulated Microfinance Institution (MFI), including licensing pathways and legal structuring.
- Partner with legal, risk, and external advisors to ensure alignment with regional regulatory requirements.
Strategic Partnerships and Capital Mobilisation
- Support capital mobilisation through relationship-building with DFIs, philanthropy, and mission-aligned investors.
- Provide strategic input into capital structuring and financial planning, ensuring external resources are aligned with operational and impact goals.
- Represent Inkomoko’s investment strategy and vision to key stakeholders.
What we’re looking for:
For this role, the successful candidate will have these qualities:
Technical Competencies:
- 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in microfinance, capital markets, investment management, or impact investing, ideally in emerging markets.
- Demonstrated success in overseeing diverse loan portfolios and developing inclusive investment strategies.
- Familiarity with a breadth of financial products, including digital and fintech-enabled tools, that can serve diverse and underserved populations. The VP should be able to lead product development teams rather than act as a technical specialist.
- Experience designing systems and policies to support compliant, high-performing investment operations at scale.
- Understanding of East Africa’s regulatory environment for financial services and microfinance.
- Experience with blended finance and mission-aligned capital structures is a plus.
