Market Strategy Technical Lead – Africa

  • We are seeking a highly motivated individual with outstanding analytical, strategic, communication and teamwork skills. The successful candidate will adhere to the core RVMC values and work ethic. The successful candidate will report to the Director, RVMC Secretariat. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses of the region’s vaccine markets and recommend ‘demand-side’ financing models and interventions suited to the regionalised vaccine manufacturing objectives in the African context.
  • Work closely and proactively develop and manage relationships with key partners to support the development of the Africa vaccine manufacturing industry and in coordination with the Africa CDC as a key partner, the AU Member States, and international organisations and partners.
  • To develop recommendations to implement strategies that promote the geo-diversified vaccine manufacturing efforts and related pooled procurement mechanisms.
  • Engage RVMC’s approaches in advocacy and aligning partners to optimise adoption of innovative financing tools, including increasing domestic health spending amongst AU member states.
  • Facilitate relevant partnerships across public, private, and philanthropic sectors to mobilize resources for vaccine demand.
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of demand-side financing interventions on vaccine uptake and equity.
  • Cultivate relationships and collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including health agencies (e.g. Africa CDC), regional and global organisation (e.g. African Union, CHAI), NGOs, and private sector partners, to drive market-shaping initiatives.
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and monitoring of market-shaping projects to ensure they meet objectives and deadlines.
  • Identify and develop solutions to address barriers to market entry and growth, such as regulatory challenges or supply chain issues.
  • Develop and promote sustainable solutions that enhance market efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Any other duties as required.

Education, Experience and Competence

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Pharmacy, Biological Sciences, Public Health, Economics, Business Management or a related field and at least 7 years of experience in a related field; OR Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Pharmacy, Biological Sciences, Public Health, Economics, Business Management or a related field and at least 10 years of experience in a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in relevant market-shaping activities for health commodities, including pooled procurement mechanisms involving more than one country.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in initiating and/or implementing end-to-end market strategies for vaccine products in similar LMIC settings.
  • Possession of an in-depth understanding on establishment and operationalizing multi-country market-shaping mechanisms. Public, non-profit, or private sector experience in health commodity supply, quantification, procurement, distribution, financing, and regulation are added advantages.
  • Experienced in working in projects in Africa involving vaccines or biologics market shaping. Additional competencies in regulatory, financing, supply chain, and logistics would be an advantage.
  • Experience working (or supporting work) in LMICs (Low- and Middle-Income Countries) in Africa is preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record of analysing quantitative and qualitative data and independently developing analytical solutions, recommendations and related outputs / products.
  • Solid understanding of the international and regional key global health stakeholders (Africa CDC) and their strategies as well as funding organisations (public and private) and financing mechanisms.
  • Project management skills with a demonstrable track record of delivering multi-partner/work-stream/country projects on time and to budget.
  • Expertise in developing project goals, objectives and KPIs to assess progress and necessary adaptation to deliver outputs and outcomes.
  • Experience working remotely with a decentralized team.
  • Experience in vaccines or biotechnology R&D, and/or health financing.
  • Experience working in or supporting LMICs.
  • Prior knowledge or experience of global health partners within the vaccine ecosystem.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, team player, able to work in different cultural environments, to negotiate timelines and develop effective international collaboration.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to navigate political environments and public-private partnerships.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and working knowledge in one or more of the AU working languages (Arabic, French, Portuguese and Spanish) will be an added advantage.
  • Awareness of cultural, equality, diversity, and inclusion aspects involved in international teams and partner collaboration.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with complete discretion.

Travel and Location Requirements

  • This will be a role based in the African region
  • CEPI/RVMC reserves the right to assess the feasibility of employment in the specific country of residence of the shortlisted candidates.
  • CEPI/RVMC is unable to sponsor a work permit for this fixed-term contract position.
