Head of Engineering – Solar/Mini-Grids Job
Inuka is partnering with a leading renewable energy company to find a Head of Engineering – Solar/Mini-Grids to be based in Nairobi. This individual will work closely with the investments team to evaluate and manage solar mini-grid projects across Africa, overseeing assets through engineering, procurement, construction, and operations. The role is key to both technical due diligence and portfolio-wide performance optimisation.

Responsibilities:
- Evaluate solar mini-grid investments from a technical perspective, advising the investment team on opportunities and risks
- Conduct techno-economic analysis on mini-grid assets, assessing commercial implications of technical approaches
- Develop and update technical standards for successful implementation and operation of mini-grid projects
- Collaborate with developers on strategic component selection (solar panels, batteries, inverters, control systems, etc.)
- Oversee mini-grid projects during EPC phases to ensure technical compliance
- Manage partners throughout the project development cycle, including milestone approvals
- Enforce technical standards within development services contracts
- Optimise operational performance through oversight of operating partners and remote monitoring
- Ensure compliance with operating service agreements
- Review and guide proposals from operators and manage site expansions and technical upgrades
Qualifications:
- 6+ years of experience in assessing, implementing, and managing renewable energy or off-grid solar projects in Africa
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field required
- Familiarity with solar PV systems and operating assets
- Knowledge of LV and MV distribution networks
- Proven ability to independently manage multi-stakeholder infrastructure projects
- Registered member of a recognised engineering professional body
