Field Doctor Job
The Field Doctor will be responsible for delivering comprehensive medical and emergency care to staff, researchers, field school students and visitors at the Turkwel and Ileret Campus as well as the Nairobi Support Office. This position requires a highly skilled and self-driven healthcare professional with experience in emergency and wilderness medicine, capable of operating effectively in remote and resource-limited environments. The Field Doctor will assess and manage a broad range of medical conditions, provide first response to emergencies, and collaborate with other team members to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all personnel on site
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive primary and emergency medical care to researchers, staff, and field school students during academic and research activities.
- Assess and manage a wide range of health issues, including injuries, infections, dehydration, scorpion/snake bites, and environmental exposure.
- Develop, implement, and update emergency response protocols across both campuses, including evacuation procedures for remote areas.
- Collaborate with local health facilities and referral centers to ensure continuity of care and access to specialized treatment when necessary.
- Deliver emergency medical care on-site during field expeditions and coordinate response in crisis scenarios such as accidents or acute illnesses.
- Organize and lead regular emergency drills and first-aid training sessions to prepare staff and students for potential field hazards.
- Design and implement health education programs on topics such as tropical disease prevention, hydration, injury prevention, and mental health.
- Conduct regular medical screenings, risk assessments, and health counseling to reduce preventable illness in the field.
- Lead budgeting and planning for the institute’s medical department, ensuring adequate resource allocation and procurement of medical supplies.
- Supervise and mentor the resident clinical officer, with a focus on leadership, clinical excellence, and efficient service delivery.
- Coordinate and lead a range of community outreach initiatives, including menstrual hygiene education and distribution of period panties through the Period Panties Program.
- Qualifications and Experience:
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery from a recognized institution
- Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board
- Valid Practice License
- BLS and ACLS certification
- First Aid Skills
- Experience:
At least 2 years of working experience as a medical officer.
