Job Summary

The Anaesthesiologist / Anaesthetist is responsible for delivering high-quality perioperative anaesthesia care across a range of ophthalmic procedures. The role involves administration of local anaesthesia with sedation, regional blocks, and general anaesthesia for both adult and pediatric patients. The position supports high-volume surgical lists including cataract, glaucoma, retinal, oculoplastic, and pediatric cases, while ensuring patient safety, effective pain management, rapid recovery, and adherence to WHO Surgical Safety Checklist protocols and outcome monitoring.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Pre-Operative Care

  • Conduct comprehensive pre-anaesthetic assessments including medical history, airway evaluation, comorbidities, laboratory review, and surgical fitness
  • Optimize high-risk patients including those with diabetes, hypertension, cardiac conditions, pediatric and geriatric populations
  • Obtain informed consent for anaesthesia and communicate risks and anaesthetic plans to patients or guardians
  • Prescribe appropriate premedication and provide fasting instructions in line with established protocols
  • Participate in pre-operative briefings and WHO Surgical Safety Checklist (Sign-In phase)

Intra-Operative Care

  • Administer and monitor anaesthesia including topical, peribulbar, retrobulbar, sub-Tenon’s blocks, intravenous sedation, general anaesthesia, and total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA)
  • Provide anaesthesia for pediatric ophthalmic procedures including squint correction, trauma, and congenital cataract surgeries
  • Continuously monitor patient vitals, airway, and oxygenation, and promptly manage complications such as hypotension, bradycardia, and laryngospasm
  • Collaborate with surgeons to achieve optimal akinesia, analgesia, and patient cooperation during procedures
  • Ensure readiness and proper functioning of anaesthesia machines, monitoring equipment, emergency drugs, and difficult airway management tools

Post-Operative Care

  • Safely transfer patients to recovery (PACU) and provide comprehensive handover to recovery staff
  • Manage post-operative pain, nausea and vomiting (PONV), and anaesthesia-related complications
  • Review day-case patients prior to discharge to ensure clinical stability
  • Complete WHO Surgical Safety Checklist (Sign-Out phase) and ensure accurate documentation of anaesthesia records

Quality, Safety and Clinical Support

  • Lead and respond to anaesthesia-related emergencies including anaphylaxis, cardiac arrest, and malignant hyperthermia scenarios
  • Perform routine checks, calibration, and maintenance of anaesthesia equipment, including documentation of service logs
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and accountability of controlled drugs in accordance with regulatory requirements
  • Train and mentor nurses, ophthalmic clinical officers, and students in basic life support (BLS), sedation safety, and anaesthetic techniques
  • Participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality meetings, and quality improvement initiatives

Administration and Monitoring & Evaluation

  • Accurately complete anaesthesia documentation in EMR systems and theatre registers for all procedures
  • Monitor and track anaesthesia-related outcomes including complications, failed blocks, cancellations, and delays
  • Contribute to monthly Ministry of Health (MOH) reports and internal hospital performance dashboards
  • Support outreach programmes by providing anaesthesia services during eye camps where required
  • Specialist: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) with Master of Medicine (MMed) in Anaesthesia, registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) as a Specialist Anaesthesiologist
  • OR Medical Officer: MBChB with Higher Diploma in Anaesthesia or equivalent experience, registered with KMPDC
  • OR Clinical Officer – Anaesthetist: Diploma in Clinical Medicine with Higher Diploma in Anaesthesia, registered with the Clinical Officers Council (COC)
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in theatre anaesthesia practice; experience in ophthalmic anaesthesia (Preferred)
  • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications
