Leadership and Business Challenges to Expect in 2025
A Guide for Managers, CEOs, and Business Owners in Kenya.
As we look ahead to 2025, several key areas are poised to significantly impact how managers, CEO’s, and business owners navigate their leadership roles. Let’s delve into these pressing challenges and explore strategies to effectively address them for a better year.
1. Taxes, taxes, taxes. Managing and navigating change brought about by new taxes affecting businesses and employees alike.
The ever-evolving tax landscape in Kenya will continue to pose significant challenges for businesses, affecting both employers and employees. As leaders we must stay informed about new tax regulations, anticipate their impact, and proactively adapt our financial strategies to mitigate risks and maintain compliance.
2. Motivating and inspiring our employees when we don’t have money.
Keeping our team motivated when times are tough will continue to be challenging. As you feel the financial pressure, so do your employees. So, what do you do if money is not an option. In 2025, focus on non-monetary rewards like recognition, training your staff, offering opportunities for growth, and ensuring that your business offers a positive work environment. As discussed in a previous article, focusing on non-monetary rewards will yield better returns in the long term.
3. Developing your managers to execute the business agenda as well as to inspire staff.
Your managers are the backbone of your team. If you are not happy with your business and employee performance, it all starts with the caliber of your managers. In 2025, apart from ensuring you hire right, invest in your managers growth through training programs that focus on leadership development, communication, change management, decision-making, problem-solving, etc. An empowered manager will lead by example, inspire their teams, and drive business success. Have you identified some gaps with your managers affecting your employees/business performance?
4. Dealing with pressure and stress at a personal level.
We all know that leadership comes with its fair share of stress. To stay on top of your game, take care of yourself. A good place to start is to find a balance between work and personal life. Also, lean on your social networks for support, and always delegate tasks that an employee can handle. A business that requires you to operate is a job and not a business so empower your team. Your well-being is essential for effective leadership. Prioritizing your mental and physical well-being is essential if you are to lead successfully.
5. Transparency in communication: The power of honest talk.
Transparency is key to building trust with your team. when your employees feel heard and valued, they’re more likely to go the extra mile. Encourage or even train your managers and leaders to hone their communication skills and to be able to communicate in good and bad times. One of the trainings we offer is on how managers can learn to give feedback and how to have difficult conversations with employees. This is an area that many managers especially new ones struggle with.
6. Setting achievable goals and targets.
Every year, you set ambitious goals, but often, you fall short. Why? In 2025, as leaders we must focus on setting smart (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound) goals that align with the organization’s capabilities. To avoid the pitfalls of unrealistic targets, we must adopt a data-driven approach. By analyzing past performance, identifying key performance indicators (KPI’s), and aligning goals with strategic objectives, you can set achievable targets.
7. Retaining high-performing employees.
Keeping your high-performing employees is a smart business strategy. Most of the efforts of many business leaders are focused on non-performing or problematic employees, and rightly so because you want to see them improve. However, this shouldn’t be to the detriment of good performing employees who are sometimes ignored because they are doing their job. In 2025, come up with initiatives geared towards retaining your best employees.
As we approach 2025, leaders in Kenya must proactively address these challenges and adapt to change. By staying forward-thinking, you can navigate the complexities of the business landscape and ensure that 2025 is successful for you at a personal and business level.
