Managing Older Employees? Leadership Tips for Young Managers

You have recently been promoted to a leadership position. In your team, you are responsible for employees including those older and more experienced than you are. You are worried that due to the age gap and experience, they will not respect you as a leader which can affect how you lead. Is this you and are you wondering how you can lead your team successfully despite these factors?

Here are some tips on how you can handle such kind of a situation;

1. Get to know and relate to them. Understand their life and how they view different situations, their strengths, and work habits. When doing that, be respectful and open-minded. It will help them know you appreciate what they bring to the table.

2. When you make any changes, acknowledge the way people did things and their wealth of knowledge. Communicate why the change is important and be willing to learn and listen. Consult them to contribute to the process and work together with them and be open to learn. When you have to train, ensure that you teach with respect.

3. Communicate often and clearly. Communication with your team while seeking and providing feedback is crucial. Encourage your team to be open and honest and validate and appreciate their contribution. Acting upon and implementing their ideas is also important for them to feel appreciated.

4. Be supportive and collaborative. Work together with your team and even ask for help where others are more skilled. Allow for an environment where you can exchange, appreciate and implement their ideas as this can make them feel like they belong.
