Location: The Tala Hospital

The Tala Hospital is a modern Level 4 Hospital, full-service healthcare facility located along Nairobi–Kangundo Road, about 600 m from Tala Market in Tala town. It operates 24/7, offering both outpatient and inpatient care to residents of Machakos and neighbouring regions. The hospital goal is providing quality, affordable, community-focused healthcare.

Job Summary

The Hospital Dentist will provide comprehensive, patient-centred dental care across preventive, restorative, and emergency services. The role involves diagnosing and managing oral health conditions, performing a broad range of clinical dental procedures, responding to dental emergencies, and working collaboratively within the multidisciplinary hospital team. The Hospital Dentist will contribute to excellent clinical outcomes, high standards of patient safety, and a positive patient experience in line with Tala Hospital’s mission and values.

Clinical Duties

  • Conduct comprehensive dental examinations, assessments, and accurate diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial conditions.
  • Develop and implement appropriate treatment plans in consultation with patients, ensuring informed consent.
  • Provide preventive and restorative dental care, including:
    • Dental fillings, scaling and polishing, extractions, and minor oral surgical procedures.
    • Rotary endodontic procedures.
    • Paediatric dental care, including preventive and restorative treatments.
  • Manage dental emergencies, including trauma, acute infections, severe pain, and swelling.
  • Refer complex cases appropriately and coordinate care with other medical specialists when required.
  • Ensure strict adherence to infection prevention and control (IPC) standards, including sterilization, waste management, and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely patient clinical records in accordance with hospital policy and regulatory requirements.

Patient Care & Communication

  • Provide clear explanations to patients regarding diagnoses, treatment options, procedures, risks, and expected outcomes.
  • Educate patients on oral health promotion, disease prevention, and post-treatment care.
  • Deliver compassionate, ethical, and culturally sensitive care to all patients.
  • Ensure a consistently high standard of patient experience, professionalism, and confidentiality.

Coordination & Teamwork

  • Work collaboratively with dental assistants, Community Oral Health Officers (COHOs), nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Provide guidance, supervision, and on-the-job support to dental assistants and COHOs where applicable.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions and hospital clinical meetings.
  • Support smooth patient flow and coordination of services within the dental clinic and the wider hospital.

Administrative & Operational Duties

  • Ensure proper handling, care, and maintenance of dental equipment and instruments.
  • Support inventory management by monitoring dental materials, consumables, and supplies, and reporting shortages in a timely manner.
  • Comply with hospital policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in clinical audits, quality assurance, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to accurate reporting of clinical activity and service statistics as required by management.

Professional Development

  • Engage in continuous professional development (CPD) and Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities to maintain licensure and enhance clinical skills.
  • Attend hospital trainings, departmental meetings, and professional forums as required.
  • Additional hands-on training or certification in Orthodontics or other advanced dental specialties will be considered an added advantage.
  • Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree from a recognized institution.
  • Valid registration and current practicing license with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
  • Current Professional Indemnity Insurance cover.
  • Minimum of 1–3 years of relevant clinical experience (internship experience considered).
  • Demonstrated competence in routine and advanced dental procedures.
  • Strong communication skills, professionalism, ethical conduct, and ability to work effectively in a team-based environment.
