Key Responsibilities

Financial Management

• Own HELGA’s day-to-day financial operations end-to-end: transaction recording, monthly closings, annual accounts, and cash flow management — all to a standard that
• would satisfy a demanding external auditor
• Build and maintain internal control systems robust enough to protect the organization under pressure — and continuously improve them as the context evolves
• Provide the Executive Director and programme leads with timely, accurate, and clearly communicated financial information so they can lead well

Donor Compliance & Reporting

• Prepare financial reports for institutional donors on time, every time — and to the quality standard those donors expect
• Monitor burn rates and budget vs actuals across all grants, flagging deviations early and working across teams to course-correct
• Be the organisation’s authority on donor rules and regulations — helping programme colleagues understand what compliance looks like in practice, not just on paper

Planning & Budgeting

• Lead annual and project-level budget development processes that are strategic, realistic, and tightly aligned with HELGA’s funding landscape
• Support proposal teams with financial modelling, costing, and budget narratives that are accurate and donor-appropriate
• Run scenario analyses and forecasts that give leadership real options — not just data

Procurement, Audit & Risk

• Oversee HELGA’s procurement function to ensure full compliance with donor regulations and organisational policy — every step documented, every decision defensible
• Maintain the organisation in a state of perpetual audit-readiness, coordinating internal and external audits and implementing recommendations without delay
• Lead the identification and management of financial risks before they become operational problems

Team Leadership

• Lead, mentor, and develop staff across finance, HR, and procurement — building a high-performance operations function that the whole organisation relies on
• Model the standards of accountability, transparency, and professionalism that HELGA expects of everyone

Qualifications

Essential

• A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline
• CPA, ACCA, or equivalent professional qualification (strongly preferred — if you are close to completion, tell us)
• Five to seven years of progressive finance experience, with meaningful time spent in an NGO or donor-funded environment
• Proven ability to manage grant compliance across multiple institutional donors simultaneously
• A track record of preparing high-quality donor financial reports that pass scrutiny
• Deep familiarity with procurement regulations in a donor-funded context Desirable
• Hands-on experience with USAID, EU, FCDO, UN agencies, or the MasterCard Foundation — you know what their reporting looks like and what their auditors care about
• Experience contributing to proposal budgets for competitive grant applications
• Familiarity with accounting systems commonly used in the Kenyan NGO sector
