4 Ways To Prepare For PMP Exam and Earn A Certification

“A friend in my previous workplace introduced me to the PMP exam but by then, I didn’t feel the urgency to sign up for the course. I realized its importance the previous year when I attended an interview and the first question was, have you acquired PMP certification? I decided to enroll in PMP Exam Course which took one month and I was to take the exam the following month but I didn’t manage because I felt I was not prepared well. By the time I decided to take 10 months later, I had forgotten what I had learned in the class so I had to start all over again because the information had faded away.” Said Joel.

After conversing with one of the trainers, Joel was given a strategy for him to prepare and pass the PMP exam.

Passing the PMP Exam is not easy and studies show that 2 out of 5 candidates fail the exam on their first attempt.

The reason why they fail is because they don’t prepare for the mock tests or they don’t know the right approach to handle the exam.

So how can you prepare and crack the PMP exam? Here are 4 steps:

1. Review The Content Outline

A content outline is a detailed overview of the topics that are covered and going through it will prepare you to pass the exam because you will know what is likely to be asked based on the course outline.

When you go through the outline, you will gain reasonable command of the content covered in the PMBOK® Guide and nothing will sound unfamiliar to you during the exam.

2. Have A Study Strategy

When preparing for the PMP exam, ensure you leave no stone unturned by covering all the areas that lead to your PMP certification.

Create a plan and break your study sessions into smaller sessions and prepare a study plan which includes going through the PMBOK, preparing the mock tests and other relevant materials for the best results, it is important to study until the final day of the exam.

Joel was not ready for the exam because he had not prepared well but the trainer gave him an example of a study strategy that he could use.  For example Monday and Tuesday:  three hours going through the sections of PMBOK® Guide. Wednesday and Thursday: three hours reviewing the previous questions and answers. Friday and Saturday: taking a mock exam and reviewing the answers.

3. Join A Study Group

If Joel had accountable team members, he would have been motivated to stay on course and he would have been encouraged to read on regular basis and make preparation part of his routine.

A good study group is important and if you don’t have one, consider creating one because it helps to break the monotony and you will get ideas on how to improve the areas that you are not confident in.

4. Envision the Finish Line

Have a clear mission statement that spells out the importance of earning PMP certification because this will help you remain focused throughout the preparation process.

Share your goals with others for you to stay on track as you seek support from your boss, colleagues, and family members.

For you to crack the PMP exam, it is important to have a great deal of commitment and thorough preparation before you take the exam.
