6 Greatest Lessons I have Learnt About Public Speaking

Making a presentation in front of the public is a challenging task. I know it is not only me.

Studies show that people would prefer being in a casket to reading a eulogy during a burial.

Initially, I was frightened and very nervous standing in front of people, leave alone speaking. This affected my career largely because I used to present monthly reports in front of large audiences. My presentation was not structured well and I lost the audience in most of my presentations. When I enrolled in communicate with confidence course, I understood the process of making a presentation, organized my points, and engaged the audience. This boosted my confidence and I can now stand in front of any group.  As we are speaking now, I have a project I am going to defend the following week and public speaking training has boosted my confidence and equipped me with relevant skills.

Here are 6 lessons I have learned about public speaking.

1. It Is Easier After The First Time

If you are nervous when speaking in public for the first time, remember that you will be better the second time. To overcome this, you will need to practice for you to perfect your skills.

For me, my first presentation made me lose the audience because I was not able to connect with them and deliver effectively.

2. With Every Presentation, You Will Have New Experience

Public speaking involves speaking to different audiences and presenting new topics. This will give you a chance to understand their cultures and demographics.

3. There Is Always More To Learn

For you to move from a novice speaker to an expert, you will have to learn. You can enroll in public speaking training, learn from videos, or read articles.

If there is a great speaker whom you are looking up to, you can make that person your mentor and learn from their success stories.

For example, after enrolling in public speaking training, I learned ways to boost my confidence, how to structure my presentation and how to engage the audience.

4. Learning From Mistakes Enhances Your Presentation

When speaking in public, it is important to understand how you present so that you improve your next presentation.

You can record yourself and review it later so you to understand your areas of weakness. You can also ask the audience about your presentation for you to know the areas that you need to work on.

5. Speaking Builds Your Communication Skills

Communication skill is essential in all industries and the more you speak in public, the more you develop your skills.

For example, public speaking enabled me to understand how to convey a message concisely and ensure that it was understood by getting their feedback.

6. It’s Not Just Talking; It’s About Problem-Solving

When developing a message, there is a problem that you want to solve.  During and after your presentation, the audience may ask some questions. It is important to connect your message with the audience’s needs.

Over to You!

If you want to have a successful presentation, it is important to understand the audience, their issues, and how your message will address those issues. During the presentation, involve the audience and ensure you are on the same page. After the presentation, give and get feedback for you to know how you will improve your next presentation.
