How I Improved My Communication Skills From Zero To Hero
Have you ever been trusted with responsibilities but failed because of ineffective communication?
This was me a few years ago. I was working as an admin assistant and most of the time, I handled internal communication matters. Sometimes, my boss would ask me to send information to clients but because of the backlog of work I had, I would forget and miscommunicate some information to employees and this led to mistrust. This lowered my self-esteem to a point I wouldn’t apply for other job opportunities because I didn’t express my interest and I wasn’t confident to take up responsibilities because of my poor communication skills. To improve my skills, I enrolled in Communication Skills Course at CSS and this was a turn-around in my career. I became an effective communicator in the company and this landed me a front-office manager role in our company.
I am very sure I am not alone, many people struggle with their communication skills, and this has inhibited them from getting promotions and advancing in their careers.
Having effective communication skills is important regardless of your industry and therefore it is important to take a step to develop your skills.
Here are 5 tips that can help you improve your communication skills and be a hero like me.
1. Find A Communication Hero To Be Your Mentor.
Look for communication experts who inspire you to help you nurture your strengths. This will help you grow to be an effective communicator because they will coach and guide you on ways that will help you reach the desired level.
2. Build Up Your Communication Skills Slowly.
For you to perfect your communication skills, it is important to take time . Practice in front of a mirror or a friend and record your presentation for you to monitor your progress and do an evaluation.
3. Enroll In Communication Skills Course.
Signing up for training helps you to learn proven tips and top strategies that will help you be a hero in communication.
If I had not enrolled in a communication skills course, I would still be in the same position and I wouldn’t have known the key tools essentials to boost my self-esteem.
4. Get Genuine and Constructive Feedback.
Getting feedback from the trainer or friends will help you know the areas that need to be worked on and get advise on how to improve your communication skills.
For instance, during the training, I had to make a presentation and I would get feedback from the trainer and my fellow trainees. This encouraged me to work even better towards improving on my areas of weakness.
5. Focus On Non-verbal Communication.
Mastering nonverbal cues and nonverbal signals prevent miscommunication hence it is important to pay attention to facial expressions and body language.
It is therefore essential to spend more time preparing for how to deliver than you do developing awesome content.
Wrap-Up
Improving your communication skills makes you productive in your workplace and cuts down on unintended consequences that arise from miscommunication. Communicating clearly will help you express yourself in job interviews, company meetings, and in your personal life.
