What Is Your Most Valuable Asset As An Accountant?

Remember that time during an interview when you were asked what your most valuable asset as an accountant is?

“My papers?” you thought. No, every accountant has papers.

“My network?” you thought. No, unless they know of a vacant position.

You went home thinking about it and still could not find what your most valuable asset is.

What then is your most valuable asset? What sets you apart from all other accountants?

Is it your skills in the usage of QuickBooks? Or knowledge of iTax maybe?

Skills!

Yes, the skills you have are what separate you from every other accountant.

Practical Accounting is therefore about the skills you possess that every employer is looking for when hiring accountants.

Accounting comes in all shapes and sizes including home accounting, managerial accounting and small business accounting. Think of just how accounting skills can be useful to most individual departments such as HR, Project Management and others.

Accounting skills have always been there. However, just as the business world is constantly changing, so are the skills that are required by employers. So, why is it so important to know?

Why do we need Practical Accounting skills?

Since John, an accountant, graduated a year ago, he’s yet to get a job. He does get contracts for a month or two, but he’s yet to get a permanent or long term job.

When I asked him what the hardest bit of getting a job was, he told me most employers asked him what practical skills he has.

There are some very good reasons why you need Practical Accounting skills

They are many reasons why every accountant should have Practical Accounting Skills.

Let’s check out a few.

  1. It’s a great way to demonstrate your expertise. Without experience your chances of getting a job or advancing to the next level are slim. Employers are keen on professionals who can perform various accounting functions.
  2. It is a good way to be marketable when you apply for accounting jobs. You might be a graduate, a CPA(K), CPS etc but without practical accounting skills, you will keep missing out on great job opportunities.
  3. It is an opportunity for you to advance in your career. With practical accounting skills, you can launch a career in accounting.
  4. You will be able to bridge the gap that exists between what is taught at school (the theory) versus what employers are looking for.

Being an accountant who possesses all the practical skills is something you can learn.
