Role Purpose

The HeadTeacher Junior School provides visionary instructional leadership and expert management for all staff within Grades 7–9. This role is central to ensuring high-quality teaching, effective implementation of the Kenyan Competency-Based Education (CBE), and outstanding academic and behavioral outcomes. The HeadTeacher Junior School will mentor, coach, and professionally develop teachers, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.

Must Have

The candidate must demonstrate a proven track record of success in delivering the Kenyan national 8-4-4 curriculum. This includes:

Instructional Expertise: Evidence of effective teaching and learning strategies aligned with the 8-4-4 system, particularly in preparing students for national examinations (KCPE/KCSE) and actual evidence of performance rank nationwide.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership & Communication Administrative Management

  • Daily Operations Oversight: Ensure smooth running of all Junior School activities, including timetabling, classroom allocation, and resource management.
  • Efficiency & Compliance: Monitor administrative processes to guarantee efficiency, adherence to school policies, and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Resource Coordination: Manage logistical needs such as teaching materials, facilities, and support services to optimize the learning environment.
  • Problem-Solving: Anticipate and resolve operational challenges quickly, ensuring minimal disruption to teaching and learning

Internal Communication

  • Information Flow: Act as the central link between the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and Junior School staff, ensuring clear, timely, and transparent communication.
  • Feedback Channels: Establish effective systems for gathering staff input, concerns, and suggestions, and relay them constructively to the management.
  • Policy Dissemination: Communicate school policies, updates, and strategic priorities to staff, ensuring consistent understanding and implementation.
  • Collaboration & Alignment: Facilitate regular staff meetings, briefings, and updates to align the Junior School team with school goals.
  • Culture Building: Promote a culture of openness, trust, and collaboration through effective communication practices.

External Communication

  • Parent Engagement: Serve as a key liaison with parents, ensuring they are well-informed about academic progress, pastoral care, and school initiatives.
  • Stakeholder Relations: Maintain professional communication with external stakeholders, including education authorities and community partners to strengthen the school’s reputation and partnerships.
  • Information Sharing: Provide timely updates to parents and stakeholders through newsletters, meetings, and digital platforms, reinforcing transparency and trust.
  • Crisis & Issue Management: Communicate effectively during sensitive or urgent situations, ensuring clarity, reassurance, and alignment with school values.
  • Representation: Act as an ambassador for the Junior School, representing its vision and achievements in external forums and engagements.

Instructional Leadership & Professional Development

  • Academic Ǫuality Assurance and Enhancement: Take full responsibility for the quality of teaching and learning across the Junior School, setting and maintaining exceptionally high standards of pedagogy and instructional delivery.
  • Coaching & Mentoring: Lead a rigorous coaching and mentoring program. Conduct regular classroom observations and provide constructive feedback to drive measurable improvements in teaching practice.
  • Curriculum Expertise (CBE): Collaborate with the Head of Curriculum to ensure teachers possess deep subject knowledge and effectively apply learner-centered methodologies, including Project-Based Learning (PBL) and competency-based assessment.
  • Promoting Values: Embed CBE core competencies and values into daily teaching, fostering character development and responsible citizenship.
  • CPD Strategy: Design and lead impactful Continuous Professional Development (CPD) workshops on differentiation, assessment, and positive behaviour management.
  • Performance Management: Directly oversee the appraisal cycle for Junior School teachers, setting smart goals, monitoring progress, and ensuring accountability.

Staff Management

  • Line Management: Provide direct leadership to all Junior School teaching and support staff.
  • Team Culture: Build a collaborative, professional, and supportive team culture that encourages sharing of best practices and reflective teaching.
  • Staff Deployment: Ensure effective allocation of staff and resources to maximize learning opportunities and maintain workload balance.
  • Recruitment & Induction: Lead the recruitment and induction of new staff, ensuring alignment with the school’s ethos and instructional expectations.

Academic & Behavioral Oversight

  • Academic Attainment: Ensure teachers use assessment data to track progress, identify gaps, and implement targeted interventions to raise achievement.
  • Pastoral Support: Oversee student well-being, ensuring every child is known, safe, and supported.
  • Discipline Oversight & Behaviour Management: Work collaboratively with teachers to ensure the consistent application of the school’s positive behaviour management policy. Provide strategic oversight of discipline across the Junior School, ensuring fairness, consistency, and alignment with the school’s values. Monitor trends in student conduct, identify emerging issues, and implement proactive interventions to maintain a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment.
  • Case Management: Lead resolution of disciplinary cases with fairness, consistency, and parental involvement.

Welfare

  • Learner Welfare & Safeguarding: Champion student welfare and safeguarding, ensuring staff are trained and vigilant in child protection protocols.
  • Shared Responsibility: Encourage parents and stakeholders to actively participate in promoting student and staff welfare.
  • Inclusive Culture: Ensure the Junior School is welcoming to all families, celebrating diversity and fostering belonging.
  • Supportive Environment: Foster a culture of respect, inclusion, and professional trust among Junior School staff.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: Minimum of a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.)
  • Certification: Valid registration with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC)
  • Experience: At least 5 years of teaching experience in the primary or junior phase, with a minimum of 2 years in an instructional leadership role (e.g., HeadTeacher, Head of Department), demonstrating a proven track record of raising staff performance.
  • Expertise: Strong background in instructional coaching, performance review methodologies, and practical implementation of the Kenyan CBE.
