How Gabriel Found His Dream Job Through A CSS LinkedIn Post

Gabriel had lost count of how many times he had refreshed his email that day. Nothing. Again. He had applied to so many roles, some of which he barely qualified for.

The 24-year-old had been sending out countless applications for months. He had sent out many applications with no feedback in sight. He had a solid degree in Computer Science from Kenyatta University and, he said, a decent work ethic.

Today, he works at a startup in Khoja and earns almost double what he did in his previous role. I sat him down to get his success story and to understand how everything changed for him.

1. What has your job search been like?

“I don’t remember when the shift happened. But I came across a Corporate Staffing LinkedIn post that said, “Are you looking for jobs in IT? Click Here.” I had my doubts, but clicked anyway, and the link took me to their career website, where I found more than 50 IT jobs.

From that day, I started browsing Corporate Staffing as if it were a social media app. And it changed everything for me.

 I was very desperate and wanted to do something different in my job search. So, I started checking jobs posted by Corporate Staffing daily. It was the best decision I made in months.

My friends were getting interviews. Some were getting jobs. I started wondering what was wrong with me.

2. How long were you job hunting before things turned around?

I curiously asked him as we began our chat.

“Eight months, but for some reason, it felt longer. I was sending out applications almost every day. I applied to big Kenyan companies like Safaricom three times for different roles, but nothing. KCB, Equity Bank, some consultancies in Westlands, and even NGOs.

3. What kept you going after all that rejection?

“Honestly? Bills. Rent in Nairobi doesn’t wait for you to find your dream job. But emotionally, it started becoming exhausting. I was doing a side hustle that did not pay all the bills, which is why I kept on applying even with the fatigue I had been feeling.

4. What made you realize something had to change?

“I came across the perfect role. I fit almost all the skills in the job description; I got so excited. Before that, I was applying even if I fit one skill. But this role was different”

I got so confident, I could have sworn I would get even an interview. Sadly, nothing. That made me realize that I need to change my strategy.

5. So, what did you do differently?

I realized the excitement I had because of that role meant something. I started to only apply to the roles that really match my qualifications. Then, immediately after I made that realization, I started being intentional with all my applications.

6. What is the one advice you would give to people who are actively looking for jobs?

“I Learnt about the art of tailoring your CV. Before I started following Corporate Staffing closely, I was using one CV for all the roles. So, I read an article from their website, and I started tailoring my CV for every role I found. Things started changing. It started with interview calls, which I didn’t use to get. Then the call that changed everything.”
