Job Purpose

To provide specialized nursing care to oncology patients by administering prescribed therapies, monitoring treatment progress, managing symptoms, and offering holistic support to enhance quality of life and optimize treatment outcomes in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

Duties and responsibilities

Reporting to the Nurse In-Charge, Oncology Unit, the position holder will be responsible for the following:

  • Providing specialized nursing care to oncology patients undergoing cancer treatments.
  • Administering prescribed medications and therapies safely while adhering to oncology protocols.
  • Monitoring patients for treatment-related side effects and promptly reporting adverse reactions to the oncology team.
  • Educating patients and families on cancer treatment plans, medication adherence, symptom management, and home care practices.
  • Collaborating with oncologists, pharmacists, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated and holistic patient care.
  • Maintaining strict infection prevention and control measures to protect immune- compromised patients.
  • Documenting all nursing interventions, observations, and patient progress accurately in the Hospital Management Information System (HMIS).
  • Providing emotional support to patients and families to promote coping and improve quality of life.
  • Participating in oncology research, continuous professional development, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned.

Key Qualifications and Experience Requirements

  • Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN)/Kenya Registered Nursing (KRN) from a recognized institution.
  • Higher Diploma in Oncology Nursing, or its equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Training certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) will be an added advantage.
  • Registration by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Valid practicing license as an Oncology Nurse from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Proficiency in computer applications.
  • Compliance with Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution.
