Job Summary
The Optometrist / Ophthalmic Diagnostics Officer is responsible for delivering high-quality primary and specialized eye care services. The role involves conducting detailed patient assessments, performing ophthalmic diagnostic tests, prescribing corrective lenses, supporting surgical care processes, and promoting eye health education. The position also plays a key role in ensuring accurate clinical documentation, maintaining diagnostic equipment, and contributing to continuous quality improvement within the department.
Key Responsibilities
- Obtain and document comprehensive patient history in line with clinical requirements
- Conduct visual acuity assessments for both adult and pediatric patients
- Record patient complaints and medical history accurately while ensuring safe data handling
- Measure and record intraocular pressure
- Perform objective and subjective refraction and accurately dispense optical prescriptions
- Conduct squint (strabismus) assessments and related evaluations
- Perform and support diagnostic procedures including Visual Field Analysis, Pachymetry, Corneal Topography, Fundus Photography, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), and Biometry
- Provide primary vision care including prescription, fitting, and adjustment of eyeglasses, contact lenses, and low-vision aids
- Assist in low vision assessment, rehabilitation, and support for patients with special needs
- Support ophthalmologists in pre-operative and post-operative care, including refractive procedures such as LASIK
- Educate patients on eye care, ocular hygiene, safety practices, and preventive health measures
- Refer patients to ophthalmologists or other specialists where advanced care is required
- Ensure proper handling, maintenance, and care of ophthalmic instruments and equipment
- Participate in continuous medical education (CME), research, and training activities, including supporting trainees
- Contribute to quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives within the department
- Maintain accurate records, reporting, and review of clinical work to support service efficiency
- Conduct objective refraction in theatre when required
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across departments
- Perform any other duties related to eye care as assigned by the Medical Director
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Optometry from a recognized institution
- Registered and licensed by the Optometrists Association of Kenya or relevant regulatory authority
- Valid practicing license
- Minimum of 2–3 years’ clinical experience in an eye care facility (Preferred)
- Training and hands-on experience in ophthalmic diagnostic equipment such as OCT, Visual Field Analyzer, and Corneal Topography (Preferred)
