Job Summary
The Ophthalmic Clinical Officer (OCO) is a mid-level eye care provider responsible for delivering comprehensive clinical services within the eye unit. The role involves diagnosing and managing common ocular conditions, conducting detailed eye examinations, performing minor ophthalmic procedures, and supporting surgical teams. The OCO plays a critical role in high-volume service delivery, outreach programs, and ensuring appropriate referral of complex cases to ophthalmologists.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
- Conduct general and specialized eye clinics, including screening, diagnosis, and management of common eye diseases
- Perform comprehensive eye examinations including patient history, visual acuity assessment, refraction, slit lamp examination, fundoscopy, and tonometry
- Diagnose and manage medical eye conditions such as allergic conjunctivitis, dry eye, bacterial and viral conjunctivitis, uveitis, and glaucoma
- Perform minor ophthalmic procedures including foreign body removal, corneal scraping, chalazion incision and curettage (I&C), lacrimal syringing, and suture removal
- Prescribe medications and optical corrections in accordance with scope of practice and hospital protocols
- Conduct pre-operative assessments and provide post-operative follow-up care for cataract and other ophthalmic surgeries
- Identify patients requiring surgical or specialized care and refer appropriately to ophthalmologists
Surgical and Theatre Support
- Assist ophthalmologists in theatre as a first assistant during surgical procedures
- Perform pre-operative biometry, A-scans, and intraocular lens (IOL) calculations under supervision
- Conduct minor surgical procedures independently where certified, including lid procedures and pterygium excision
- Ensure adherence to the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist for all procedures participated in
Community and Public Health
- Lead and participate in community outreach programs including school screenings, eye camps, and mobile clinics
- Train and supervise ophthalmic nurses, community health extension workers (CHEWs), and students
- Provide health education on eye disease prevention, including trachoma and diabetes-related eye conditions
- Collect, compile, and report data for blindness prevention and public health programs
Administration and Quality
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records in electronic medical records (EMR) systems and Ministry of Health (MOH) registers
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly clinical reports and statistics for monitoring and evaluation (M&E)
- Participate in clinical audits, continuous medical education (CME), and quality improvement initiatives
- Ensure proper infection prevention practices, equipment maintenance, and rational use of medicines
- Adhere to hospital policies, patient confidentiality standards, and clinical best practices
Qualifications
- Diploma or Higher Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery
- Higher Diploma in Ophthalmology from KMTC or a recognized institution
- Registration with the Clinical Officers Council of Kenya with a valid practicing license
- Minimum of 2 years’ clinical experience; experience in an eye unit (Preferred)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred
