Engineering Intern NGO Job Water Mission

Responsible for supporting engineering fieldwork, conducting site assessments, collecting field data, supporting water supply designs and hydraulic modelling, assisting with customer connections, updating as-built drawings, and supporting water system operations and maintenance. Requires an undergraduate degree in Civil, Mechanical, Environmental, or Biosystems Engineering. The position is based in Makindu and requires regular fieldwork.

Job Summary:

The Engineering Intern will report to the Technical Officer and will work closely with Water Mission Kenya’s Senior Engineer to support engineering fieldwork, design, and BOQ preparation for water supply extensions to households and institutions, as well as operation and maintenance activities. Responsibilities will include receiving customer applications, conducting field assessments (using the mWater App), working with the Senior Engineer to input data into the hydraulic model to confirm connection feasibility, determining material requirements, and following up with the technical team to ensure satisfactory connection completion — all while upholding Water Mission’s QA/QC standards and values. This role will be based in Makindu, Kenya, with regular site visits to Kambu, Muthingini, Sultan Hamud, Mutyambua, Kinyongo, Kwa Kavisi, and other areas. This is an unpaid, non-renewable internship for a period of one (1) year. Field expenses will be covered by Water Mission Waterworks LTD.

Key Responsibilities:

• Conduct fieldwork assessment for customer applications using mWater App to collect GPS and other data in line with established engineering principles and standards.
• Work with WMK Senior Engineer to simulate the collected data on the hydraulic model to determine the possibility of serving the customer from the existing water supply system and make necessary recommendations.
• Prepare schedule of material and cost estimates for the customer in consultation with the WMK Senior Engineer.
• Once the customer pays for the materials, work with Senior Engineer and Technical Officer to ensure the customer is satisfactorily connected.
• After Connection, work with the Senior Engineer to update ‘as built drawings’ and with Customer service to activate customer meter.
• Any other role as may be assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

• Completion of undergraduate program in engineering – Civil, Mechanical, Environmental or Biosystems Engineering and graduated within the last one year (2025) or awaiting graduation in 2026 (With Letter of completion from the university).

Skills and Abilities

• Demonstrated skills with office computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and drafting and modeling software (AutoCAD, EPANET, PowerCADD, SolidWorks, ProE).
• High level of integrity & stewardship, inspiring trust & confidence in the usage of resources.
• Smartphone and mobile data collection proficiency – uses mobile tools to record field data.
• Strong analytical, process design, and project planning and management skills.
• Detail-oriented and standards-driven, with strong forward planning ability.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
• Willingness and ability to travel for fieldwork.
• Strong work ethic.
