Our client is a non-profit wildlife sanctuary organization in Kenya seeking to hire a Communications Manager. This role will focus on external communications, supporting and implementing the communications strategy in close collaboration with the Chief Development Officer and the Head of Communications and Development (Kenya). This strategic position serves to elevate communications as a catalyst for fundraising initiatives, enhance public awareness with key audiences, and effectively showcase programmatic achievements. They will oversee the communications team in managing and executing these activities while leveraging social media to complement and enhance them. The role will ensure cohesive brand messaging across all channels to strengthen the organization’s reputation and impact.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Communications Strategy and Management
- The Communications Manager will be responsible for creating, managing and implementing a comprehensive external communications plan encompassing but not limited to public relations, media engagement, social media, and donor communication collateral. This includes systematically evaluating communications initiatives and overseeing the creation of high-caliber content for digital platforms, newsletters, and media releases. They will develop and maintain the organization’s style guide and brand guidelines, creating all communications protocols and keeping the communications manual current.
Calendar and Event Management
- The position holder will create and manage a coordinated calendar of key events, both internal and external, working closely with the development team to create compelling narratives around these events using all available channels.
- They will be responsible for adapting collateral for key stakeholders and managing the team’s support for events and webinars. This includes coordinating media events and ensuring effective press coverage. They will lead the creation of high-quality content which is coordinated over various platforms including website, social media, newsletters, and press releases.
Coordination and Collaboration
- A crucial element of the role involves ensuring coordination across all public channels and working closely with the development team on the global communications calendar. The Communications Manager will work with the programme team to maintain a comprehensive calendar of events for external communication, while ensuring the work of the communications teams is coordinated effectively. They will maintain close links with digital fundraising through the individual giving manager to support content creation and ensure coordination between digital and communications channels.
Content Creation and Management
- The role includes the oversight and management of multimedia content creation, including video, photo, and other communication collateral to support external communication objectives, with a particular focus on fundraising. They will oversee website content and social media strategy, develop press releases and media statements, and create both internal and external communications materials. The position requires building and maintaining strong media relationships while facilitating effective internal communication between departments.
Team Management
- The Communications Manager will provide strategic direction and mentorship to the communications team, establishing clear performance objectives and key indicators. They will be responsible for managing workflow and optimising resource allocation to achieve departmental objectives, as well as conducting thorough performance evaluations. The role demands a collaborative leadership approach that fosters innovation and professional growth within the team.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications or a related field.
- 5+ years’ experience in a similar role leading and managing a communications team.
- Excellent written and verbal skills in English, great attention to detail and commitment to high standards is required.
- Expertise in the creation of narratives using all communication mediums.
- Understanding of audience segmentation.
- Knowledge of fundraising or sales and marketing.
- Experience across all communications areas.
- Proficiency in communications software and social media platforms.
- Strong project management skills.
- Passion and appreciation of wildlife conservation and community development is essential.
- A good understanding of the Kenyan/African social-political context is essential.
