CV Power Words That Will Get You That Job

In today’s job market, your CV is the most important document you have to get your job application in the hands of the employer.

Truth is, crafting your CV to be professional may take weeks but it takes a few seconds to make a lasting impression on a potential employer.

That is why you need to be strategic and intentional about the words you include in your CV. Including the best power words in your CV can help set you apart from other candidates.

CV power words are terms usually used to capture the attention of the employer. When they are used correctly, they can have a significant impact on your success in landing job interviews and, ultimately, a job. However, misusing power words can ruin your job search.

Here are CV power words that will get you that job.

1. Achieved

Instead of using hard worker, use ‘achieved’ and back it up with examples of what you accomplished in your experience.

For example, you could say, “Achieved sales goal for three consecutive years with a reduced staff.”

This shows that you are hard-working but you have avoided saying it so directly. Rather than stating the obvious, prove it. Provide concrete examples of how you went the extra mile.

2. Created

Avoid using creativity, thinking outside the box, or being innovative.

Indicating that you created, shows that you have produced something new and original. To show off your creativity, share examples of how you developed and implemented new ideas.

3. Managed, Administered, or Directed

Employers prefer more specific words with details on how you contributed and led a group.

Using numbers to illustrate your accomplishments makes you stand out. Include metrics, data, or other statistics to enable the employer to see the impact you made.

A well-crafted CV does not have words like responsible as this creates an unclear picture of the role you played. Be specific about the level of authority you had such that if you managed or launched the project then indicate.

4. Listen and Improve

Using listen and improve instead of excellent communicator indicates how your actions made the company better.

This is an example: ‘I paid attention to my customers’ opinion and used that information to create a streamlined process that improved efficiency by two hours.’

Ensure that you provide examples of how your communication skills led to specific positive outcomes instead of showing that you are an excellent communicator.

5. Use Well-Earned Reputations

If you are an expert in a certain field, you don’t have to show off. True experts don’t need to announce their expertise, they let their well-earned reputations on the job speak for themselves. You may have done some duties well and you are confident that given a task, you will do it perfectly, but that doesn’t give you authority to claim expert on your CV.

The Bottom Line

The words that you use in your CV can make the difference between getting that dream job or getting passed over. Employers use only 7 seconds to skim through your CV and using the right power words can attract the attention of the employer and score you a second look.
