Why Your Accounting Degree Won’t Get You A Job

by Teresa Mulomi

It’s a month after you graduated with your Degree in Accounting. You are the perfect student with the perfect A’s and are looking forward to the perfect job. In your dreams, you envision a future filled with big fat paychecks, an equally big mansion and a fleet of luxurious cars. Luxuries afforded by you, courtesy of your perfect degree.

Snap out of it!

The sad reality is that your Accounting degree will not get you anything. Not a car, not a house and definitely not a job. And here are the reasons why.

Accounting graduates are everywhere

Unfortunately, Accounting is a highly saturated field with a plethora of graduates competing for scarce job opportunities. The Accounting job market is flooded with qualified and even over-qualified candidates. A bachelor’s degree plays an instrumental role in preparing graduates for almost every profession. However, while a degree demonstrates your ability to learn and execute basic accounting functions, it does not make your CV stand out to potential employers among the sea of applicants with the same academic qualifications.

An Accounting Degree doesn’t make you an expert

A degree in Accounting gives you a head start into the accounting profession. You will know and understand the basics of accounting and you will be ahead of anyone trying to get into the Accounting field without the relevant certification. Unfortunately, that certificate with your name embossed on it communicates to potential employers that you are a beginner not a guru.

A degree doesn’t reflect experience

Most recruitment manager don’t offer jobs based on degrees. They have gained an understanding that a degree certificate doesn’t amount to much when it comes to success in the workplace. Employers hire based on experience, portfolio and personality. Experience demonstrates that you are well prepared for the complex realities that accompany day-to-day office tasks. Your Portfolio serves as a solid evidence that you will deliver results while your personality determines whether you will be a great fit for the team and the company culture. As you can see, anyone can attain a degree but not every person can do a job well.

An Accounting Degree doesn’t equip you with practical industry knowledge

Perfect grades do not guarantee job readiness. There is a big mismatch between theoretical knowledge and practical industry applications. For the most part, graduates are ill-equipped with the practical skills that employers are looking for in new hires.

It is unfortunate that your degree isn’t the get-rich-quick lottery ticket you might have hoped it would be. However, all is not lost. To stay ahead of the pack, you can enhance your real-life job experience by volunteering at an organization, serving as an intern in a company or enrolling for graduate trainee programs to enhance your on-job experience.

  1. Indeed just as you’ve put it, a degree simply expresses that one is learned and has an open mind. But on the contrary, employers are looking for specialized skills to handle particular tasks. That’s why professional courses are very relevant.
