Finally Get A Promotion By Learning The Tactics Of Managing Your Boss

By Perminus Wainaina

Being the “go-to-person” when it comes to your boss does not equate to you being a “boot licker”!

The reliability and dependability the boss has when it comes to you should NEVER be misunderstood as being “the boss’s pet”.

If you are in good standing with your boss (professionally), then you are already at an advantage when it comes to a promotion and even a salary increment.

You need to be the kind of person your boss can rely and depend on to get things done. This is what it means to manage your boss!

And this can be one of the most effective ways to strategically position yourself for a promotion and eventually a leadership role.

So how then do you manage your boss and ensure you finally get that promotion?

Here are 4 highly effective and proven ways:

Tip #1: Go the extra mile

Your boss has given you a task or an assignment to work on, don’t just do what you have been told, and do more!

There’s nothing as impressive as an employee who gives more than is asked of them by going the extra mile to help the company achieve its bottom line.

This is how well performing employees continue to get salary increments, employee of the month’s awards, allowances and bonuses.

So the next time your boss asks you to do something, do more than is expected of you. Trust me, you will be rewarded for your effort when the time comes.

Tip #2: Show great personal initiative

There’s nothing that annoys a boss more than someone who constantly needs to be told what to do especially for the most obvious things!

Don’t wait for your boss to keep asking you to submit a long overdue report or bring in a certain number of clients every day.

Show initiative. Do what you are supposed to. Make their work easy.

As you take initiative, also show that you are a problem solver. In other words, learn how to offer more solutions as opposed to problems.

Tip #3: Work on your key soft skills

Soft skills are so important for you to succeed when it comes to managing your boss.

Why? You need to be someone who has the ability to communicate clearly and in a way that produces positive results.

You also need to have other critical soft skills such as leadership skills. For instance if your boss needs someone to take up a leadership position on a project or task, the first person that comes to mind is you.

What other soft skills do you think you need to have to communicate effectively with your boss?

Tip #4: Speak Up!

Are you the kind of person who attends meetings with your boss but never contributes in the meeting?

If so, what stops you from speaking up? Is it that you assume your ideas are not good enough or everyone else has said what you wanted to?

Let me tell you the truth, those who get the promotion, are those who have mastered the art of speaking up.

Not because they are the smartest or their ideas and solutions are the best, no, because regardless of how “poor” their ideas may sound, they speak up.

And this are the people the boss will approach more often than not. They know the kind of information the boss is looking for and so they go ahead and offer ideas.

Eventually, the boss will consider their ideas and before you know it, they are now team leaders!

So if you finally want to get noticed and promoted, start speaking up especially in meetings. Don’t worry that what you say will be dismissed, just say it!

Note To Self:

The value your boss places on you is equivalent to the value you place on yourself.

The art of self-promotion requires that you learn the tactics of managing your boss and eventually managing your career for success.

So from today, use these 4 guaranteed today and start positioning yourself for that long overdue promotion!

In what other ways can you manage or have you been using to manage your boss.

  1. Ruth,you’ve nailed it !

A ” tactical ” approach best describes it.It all boils down to ” complementing ” rather than ” competing ” with your boss.

I second your opinion; l would welcome an article on,” how to tactfully contribute an idea in a meeting, without coming out as competing with your boss, and even your colleagues.”

  2. I think there are tactical ways to contribute in a meeting and not outsmart your boss in the process. The ‘how’ in presenting your ideas is what matters. Perhaps we need an article on this as well…

  3. Very important tips there,Perminus.
A tried and tested tip that has worked for me is; when approaching the boss about a challenge,go armed with a practical solution(s) on best way to solving it. By so doing, you provide a ‘pool’ from which the boss will be able to suggest the most appropriate or suitable one to go with.

We adopted an “open parachute” mutual work relationship; we welcomed and respected each other’s view on various matters. Consulting each other before making an important decision, fostered an “inclusive” team bond.

To sum it up,EQ is the main thing here. You’ve got to carefully choose; what you say,how you say it,where and when to say it. Because at the end of the day,” he’s still the boss and calls the shots”.

  4. There you have talked,,,,,,,,,,I lost my job when I outsmarted my boss in a training session. It was something he could not explain then I was told to speak by the GM,,,,after that every little thing I did I had to get a warning until I was sucked simply because got late to our weekly meeting with one minute

  5. you also know many people have suffered for outsmarting the bosses? it could be the reason many prefer to work silently and keep their ideas to themselves. many boses fear and the only thing they do is hit your head to lie low. good point though if you have a mentoring boss leader
