Water Systems Operator NGO Job Water Mission

Responsible for operating and maintaining water treatment and supply systems, monitoring water quality and system performance, carrying out routine inspections and preventive maintenance, troubleshooting equipment faults, maintaining operational records, and ensuring safe and reliable water services. Requires a relevant technical qualification in Water Engineering, Plumbing, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with practical experience operating water systems and strong troubleshooting, maintenance, safety, record-keeping, and teamwork skills. The position is based in Kenya and requires field-based work.
Job Summary:
The System Operator is responsible for ensuring reliable water production, pumping, treatment, and distribution across assigned sites. This role involves operating equipment, maintaining accurate logs, and supporting preventive maintenance activities to guarantee uninterrupted water service. The System Operator reports directly to the Technical Officer.
Key Responsibilities:
Water Production & Pump Operation
- Operate boreholes, pumps, Water treatment systems, and solar systems.
- Record pumping hours, flows, and pressures.
Treatment & Water Quality Support
- Monitor chlorine dosing, tank hygiene, and system cleanliness.
- Support water quality sampling.
System Monitoring & Maintenance
- Inspect equipment and report faults immediately.
- Perform minor maintenance and repair as directed by the Technical Officer.
- Support preventive maintenance and emergency repairs.
Distribution Support
- Report leaks, bursts, and illegal connections.
- Assist in meter inspections and valve operations.
Reporting
- Maintain daily logs and submit operational data.

Qualifications
- KCSE/Craft Certificate/Certificate in Water Operations, Plumbing, or Mechanical engineering or equivalent.
Skills and Experience
- Experience in pump operations, and operation and maintenance of Water Treatment Systems is an advantage.
- Smartphone and mobile data collection proficiency – uses mobile tools to record field data.
- Technical aptitude – understands and operates water systems equipment.
- Integrity and discipline – reliable and consistent in following procedures.
- Attention to detail – accurate and thorough in monitoring and reporting.
