Key Responsibilities

Wildlife & Livestock Health Support

• Assist the Loisaba Veterinarian and KWS teams in routine and emergency veterinary interventions for wildlife and livestock within Loisaba and the wider Laikipia landscape.
• Support the health monitoring and welfare assessments of wildlife species.
• Participate in disease surveillance and vaccination campaigns for livestock and wildlife, helping to prevent outbreaks and reduce transmission risks.
• Collect, label, and record biological samples (blood, faecal, tissue, hair) for diagnostic and research purposes.
• Assist with treatment administration, immobilisations, and post-procedure recovery under veterinary supervision.

Clinical & Laboratory Assistance

• Manage and maintain the Loisaba veterinary facility and laboratory, ensuring cleanliness, organisation, and proper inventory of equipment, drugs, and consumables.
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, supporting diagnostic testing, disease screening, and data recording.
• Uphold strict biosecurity, sterilisation, and hygiene standards across all veterinary and field procedures.
• Enter and manage veterinary records, maintaining accurate logs of treatments, samples, and test results in collaboration with the veterinarian.
• Liaise and support Laboratory in Northern Kenya (LiNK) initiatives.

Conservation & Research Collaboration

• Support field research and conservation medicine projects related to wildlife health, disease ecology, and management.
• Collaborate with partner organisations, including San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, Smithsonian’s Global Health Program, KWS, WRTI, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance – Kenya, and Mpala Research Centre, on data collection, analysis, and reporting.
• Assist with implementing the Wildlife Watch Health module and other disease surveillance tools.
• Participate in scientific fieldwork, including tagging, collaring, immobilisation, and wildlife monitoring exercises.
• Contribute to data management and preparation of reports, publications, or scientific presentations as directed.

Community Engagement & Outreach

• Work with Loisaba’s Community Department and local paravets to promote responsible livestock health management and animal welfare.
• Support community outreach programmes, including education days, demonstrations, and awareness campaigns on zoonotic diseases, rabies prevention, and livestock vaccination.
• Participate in joint treatment and vaccination campaigns in collaboration with KWS, County Veterinary Officers, and partner conservancies.
• Strengthen links between Loisaba’s veterinary and community initiatives to reduce human–wildlife conflict and disease risks.

Operational Support & Administration

• Ensure the Mobile Veterinary Unit (MVU) and other veterinary vehicles are fully equipped, stocked, and maintained in field-ready condition.
• Manage inventory, procurement, and reporting of veterinary drugs, equipment, and supplies for both the Loisaba facility and MVU.
• Maintain accurate records of interventions, treatments, supplies, and sample transfers, ensuring compliance with KWS and institutional regulations.
• Prepare monthly and quarterly activity and financial reports for Loisaba, KWS, and GHP.
• Liaise with partner conservancies and KWS field teams to coordinate joint responses and updates.
• Support the training and supervision of interns, students, and community paravets under the direction of the Loisaba Veterinarian.
• Adhere at all times to Loisaba’s Health & Safety standards and wildlife handling protocols.

Qualifications & Skills

• Diploma or certificate in Animal Health, Veterinary Technology, or related field from a recognised institution.
• Registered with the Kenya Veterinary Board as a Paravet or Animal Health Assistant.
• Minimum 2 years’ experience working with livestock or wildlife in a field or clinical setting.
• Competence in animal handling, sample collection, and record-keeping.
• Proficiency in English and Kiswahili; knowledge of Maa/Samburu is an added advantage.
• Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, data entry systems).
• Valid Kenyan driving licence (motorbike licence advantageous).
• Physically fit, disciplined, and comfortable working in a remote bush environment.
