Vehicle Maintenance Mechanic role at the U.S. Embassy in Kenya, maintaining and repairing government vehicles. Requires completion of secondary school and a minimum 3-year Automotive Technical Training or apprenticeship, with 5+ years’ continuous hands-on experience as a vehicle mechanic. Full-time, on-site role.

  • The mechanic oversees the maintenance and repair of USG vehicles at post, including those operated by the Motor Pool and other USG agencies. Responsibilities include conducting preventative mechanical and electrical maintenance, performing routine services such as oil changes, brake and suspension work, tire rotations, and electrical repairs, and recommending outsourcing for complex repairs. The Mechanic ensures outsourced work meets contract specifications and quality standards. Additionally, they service the armored vehicle fleet in line with annual Armored Vehicle Maintenance guidance. The position manages DriveCam components, including installation, removal, and circuit maintenance to prevent battery drain. This role is critical to ensuring the safety, reliability, and operational readiness of the USG vehicle fleet at Post.

Vehicle Servicing and Inspection 60%

  • Services USG vehicles, ensuring that all required/recommended preventative/scheduled maintenance is accomplished in a timely manner.
  • Carries out service on vehicles, including oil change, brakes and suspensions work, and minor electrical work.
  • Carries out vehicle tire rotations, tire changes, and wheel balancing.
  • Services armored vehicle fleet following the Annual Armored Vehicle Maintenance Guidance.
  • Inspects vehicles to determine need for servicing, repair, parts replacement, and corrections to meet safety requirements.
  • Ensures that each vehicle is safe to operate. May perform the above work inspection for any other agency subscribing to ICASS maintenance management services.
  • Inspects vehicle certificates/licenses and reports expired ones for action.
  • Install DriveCam components including the Event Recording Devices, brackets and GPSs onto all mission vehicles including vehicles belonging to KEMRI (Kisumu and Nairobi), CDC, and Peace Corps.
  • Dismantles as needed and maintains them when they are faulty and ensures they don’t drain the vehicle batteries.

Procurement and Contract Services 20%

  • Makes recommendations to the Supervisors on repair work that requires outsourcing.
  • Inspects such outsourced work, both while in progress and on completion to ensure high quality parts are being used, and that high quality work is being achieved, in line with contract/work order.
  • Performs regular visits to dealers/vendors concerned with vehicle maintenance.

Reporting 20%

  • Maintains a file for each vehicle and provides necessary reports whenever requested.
  • Keeps and updates individual vehicle records/files.
  • Enters appropriate record data into the electronic systems/ILMS.
  • Ensures appropriate parts stock is maintained by warehouse, for smooth and timely servicing, through regular monitoring/feedback.

Requirements:

All selected candidates must be able to obtain and hold a:

  • security certificate; or Public Trust security clearance. Education Requirements:
  • Completion secondary school required.Additionally, completion of a minimum 3 years of Automotive Technical Training or apprenticeship, acquiring Automotive Technician Craft 3 certificate or equivalent also required.  Evaluations:

Experience:
