Job Summary

The Theatre Ophthalmic Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive perioperative care in the ophthalmic theatre. This includes preparing patients and the surgical environment, assisting surgeons during procedures, and ensuring safe postoperative recovery processes. The role requires strong technical expertise in ophthalmic equipment, strict adherence to aseptic techniques, and effective collaboration within the surgical team. 

Preoperative Responsibilities

  • Receive and verify patients using the WHO surgical safety checklist for ophthalmology
  • Prepare patients physically and psychologically for surgery, including confirming consent, site marking, administration of preoperative eye drops, and pupil dilation
  • Set up the operating theatre with required instruments, microscopes, phacoemulsification machines, consumables, and intraocular lenses (IOLs)
  • Confirm sterility of all instruments and equipment, maintaining strict aseptic technique at all times
  • Assist with administration of anesthesia (topical, local, or general) and monitor patient vital signs

Intraoperative Responsibilities

  • Perform scrub nurse duties, including passing instruments, managing sutures, handling IOLs, and maintaining the sterile field
  • Perform circulating nurse duties, including anticipating surgeon needs, managing documentation, and handling surgical specimens
  • Operate and troubleshoot ophthalmic equipment such as phacoemulsification units, operating microscopes, cautery devices, and vitrectomy units
  • Continuously monitor patient status and promptly communicate any changes to the surgical team
  • Maintain accurate counts of swabs, needles, and instruments throughout procedures

Postoperative Responsibilities

  • Safely transfer patients to the recovery area with clear and structured handover to the recovery nurse
  • Apply eye shields or pads and administer initial postoperative medications as prescribed
  • Clean, disinfect, and sterilize instruments in accordance with CSSD protocols
  • Restock theatre supplies, report equipment faults, and prepare the theatre for subsequent procedures
  • Accurately document procedures, implants used, and any adverse events in patient records and theatre registers

General Responsibilities

  • Ensure adherence to infection prevention protocols and patient safety standards within the theatre
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and monitoring and evaluation (M&E) activities related to theatre performance
  • Mentor and support junior nurses and students in ophthalmic theatre practices
  • Attend continuous medical education (CME) sessions and stay updated on advancements in ophthalmic surgical techniques

  • Diploma or Degree in Nursing (Kenya Registered Nurse or Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse)
  • Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya with a valid practicing license
  • Higher Diploma in Ophthalmic Nursing or Theatre Nursing required (both qualifications are a strong advantage)
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a surgical theatre setting
  • Experience in an ophthalmic theatre setting (Preferred)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (Preferred)
