Technician (fibre & wireless) Job (40K)

Technician Jobs

Industry: IT,

Location: Nairobi

Gross Salary KES 40,000,

Our client is an ISP company offering fibre and wireless solutions across Kenya, looking to hireg a Fibre Technician to install, splice, test, and maintain fibre optic networks across our last-mile and backbone footprint. You will be the hands on the cable — responsible for delivering reliable FTTH, FTTB, and backbone connectivity to residential, SME, and enterprise customers, and for restoring service quickly when faults occur. The role is roughly 80% field work and 20% documentation, network design support, and team coordination.

This is a hands-on technical role suited to someone who enjoys physical, problem-solving work, can operate independently across Nairobi (and occasionally upcountry), and takes pride in clean, standards-compliant installations.

Installation and provisioning

  • Install and terminate single-mode and multi-mode fibre optic cables for FTTH, FTTB, and FTTP deployments, including aerial, ducted, and underground builds.
  • Perform fibre splicing (fusion and mechanical) using industry-standard splicing machines (Fujikura, Sumitomo, INNO).
  • Install, mount, and configure CPE: ONTs, ONUs, routers, PoE switches, and customer-side patch panels.
  • Run structured cabling (CAT6, coaxial where required) inside residential and commercial premises to a neat, professional finish.
  • Install and label manholes, joint closures, ODFs, FATs, FDTs, ducting, trunking, and aerial poles in line with route designs.

Testing, commissioning, and quality

  • Conduct OTDR traces, optical power meter readings, VFL checks, and end-to-end link loss budgets before handover.
  • Verify customer-side service activation against SLA targets (download/upload speeds, latency, packet loss).
  • Document every job with as-built diagrams, GPS coordinates, splice loss reports, and clear photos.

Maintenance and fault resolution

  • Respond to assigned fault tickets within agreed SLA windows; troubleshoot last-mile, distribution, and backbone faults end-to-end.
  • Locate and repair fibre cuts, faulty splices, damaged ducts, and CPE failures.
  • Carry out preventive maintenance on FATs, joint closures, and aerial routes.
  • Take part in the on-call standby rota for after-hours, weekend, and public-holiday faults.

Network design support and reporting

  • Contribute to route surveys, low-level designs (LLDs), and BoQ preparation for new builds.
  • Update GIS / network inventory systems (e.g., QGIS, Google Earth, internal NMS) after every change.

Report daily field activity, materials consumed, and outstanding issues to the Field Operations Manager.

Safety and compliance

  • Follow all occupational safety standards: working at heights, confined-space entry (manholes), traffic management, and electrical safety near power lines.
  • Wear and maintain PPE (helmet, reflective vest, harness, safety boots, gloves, eye protection) at all times on site.
  • Comply with Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) and county-government way-leave requirements on every build.
  • Diploma in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Information Technology, or Computer Science from a recognised Kenyan institution; or TVET certificate at KNQF Level 5 or 6 in ICT, Electrical, or Electronics.
  • Minimum 2–4 years hands-on fibre optic field experience (installation, splicing, and fault resolution). Strong candidates with 1 year plus relevant attachments will be considered for a junior level.
  • CFOT (Certified Fibre Optic Technician) certification — strongly preferred. Candidates without it must be willing to obtain it within the first 6 months (e.g., via AFRALTI).
  • Demonstrable proficiency with: fusion splicers, OTDR, optical power meter, VFL, fibre cleaver, stripping tools.
  • Working knowledge of GPON architecture (OLT, ONT, splitters), PON link budgets, and basic IP networking (subnetting, VLANs, PPPoE, DHCP).
  • Familiarity with at least one major OLT vendor stack (Huawei, ZTE, or Nokia) at provisioning level.
  • Valid Kenyan BCE driving licence with at least 1 year clean driving experience. A motorcycle licence (Class A) is an added advantage for last-mile mobility.
  • Physically fit; comfortable working at heights on poles and ladders, and in confined manhole spaces.
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili.

Preferred (added advantage)

  • CCNA, Huawei HCIA-Datacom, or equivalent IP networking certification.
  • Prior experience with a Tier-1 ISP, wholesale carrier, or FTTH operator in Kenya.
  • Experience with GIS tools (QGIS, ArcGIS) and as-built documentation workflows.
  • Basic familiarity with DWDM, MPLS concepts, or backbone transmission (helpful for backbone-leaning roles).
  • A valid Certificate of Good Conduct.
