Qualifications

For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:

  • cumulative service period of twelve (12) years, three (3) of which must have been in the grade of Principal Mechanical Engineer (Mechanical and Transport), CSG 7 or in comparable and relevant positions in the public service:
  • a Bachelor of Science or Engineering Degree in any of the following disciplines: Civil Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical and production Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical and industrial Engineering, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering or its equivalent qualification for a university recognized in Kenya;
  • registered by Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) as a Professional Engineer;
  • registered as a Corporate Member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (MIEK);
  • valid annual practicing License from the Engineers Board of Kenya; and
  • demonstrated high degree of professional competence and administrative capability required capability as reflected in wok performance and results.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • developing, Implementing and reviewing policies, Strategies, Standards, guideline, procedures and frame work pertaining to mechanical engineering (mechanical and transport) services including technical works/installations, vehicles, equipment, plant machinery and workshops;
  • coordinating planning and designing of technical works/installations, vehicles, equipment, plant machinery and workshops;
  • coordinating provision of vehicles, plant and equipment on operational lease to both public and private sectors under the mechanical and transport fund (MTF) program;
  • coordinating technical monitoring and evaluation of projects pertaining to mechanical engineering services (mechanical and transport);
  • conducting research in emerging trends and technologies in mechanical engineering services (mechanical and transport);
  • identifying vehicles, plant and mechanical equipment for relocation, replacement, overhaul and disposal;
  • coordinating preparation of technical specifications and evaluation of tenders for vehicles, plants and equipment.
  • coordinating preparation of general layout drawings and shop flow organization of workshops;
  • building up and maintaining a set of standard specifications for types of vehicles, plant and equipment;
  • supervising technical work/installation, maintenance and repair of manufacturing and production machines, plant and equipment;
  • coordinating preparation of project costing and budgets for mechanical engineering (mechanical and transport);
  • preparation specifications for procurement of vehicles, plant and mechanical equipment;
  • keeping up to date information and records pertaining to mechanical engineering (mechanical and transport);
  • designing, implementing and review of programmes such as professional development graduate internship and industrial attachment programmes;
  • coordinating mechanical inspections, valuations and statutory examinations;
  • preparing strategic/workplans, budgets and setting targets; and
  • coaching and mentoring of staff.
