Our client, a premium wines and spirits boutique launching in Nairobi, is seeking a founding Shop Operations Manager to build and run the business from the ground up.

This is a ground-floor opportunity for a commercially driven, highly accountable individual who wants genuine ownership over something new. The business owner is based internationally you will be the sole on-the-ground leader operating with significant autonomy and direct responsibility for performance.

PHASE 1:SETUP (Months 1-3)

You will own the entire launch process including:

  • Sourcing and securing a suitable retail space in Parklands or surrounding areas including Kilimani, Westlands and Lavington
  • Managing all county licensing applications: wholesale liquor license, Unified Business Permit and related compliance
  • Opening the company bank account and setting up M-Pesa Business Till
  • Overseeing shop fit-out including shelving, refrigeration, security systems and signage, and managing contractors to budget and timeline
  • Establishing supplier relationships with licensed distributors and negotiating favorable terms
  • Recruiting and onboarding a shop attendant
  • Setting up all operational systems including cloud POS, stock tracking and weekly reporting

PHASE 2: ONGOING OPERATIONS (Month 4+)

  • Manage daily shop operations across all trading hours
  • Supervise and develop the shop attendant
  • Maintain premium boutique experience – product knowledge, shop presentation and customer service standards
  • Manage stock levels, place reorders and conduct weekly inventory counts
  • Submit weekly reports to the owner every Monday – P&L summary, stock variance, cash reconciliation and operational updates
  • Grow revenue through walk-in retail, corporate account development and events and hospitality channels
  • Ensure full compliance with all licensing conditions, operating hours and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain all security protocols – CCTV, alarm systems, cash handling and safe management

Essential:

  • Minimum 3 years experience in retail management, FMCG or hospitality – experience in premium alcohol, wine or beverages strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to manage staff, set standards and hold people accountable
  • Prior experience navigating government licensing or regulatory processes in Kenya is a significant advantage
  • Strong financial literacy – able to read a P&L, manage a budget and reconcile cash accurately
  • Impeccable integrity – this role involves managing cash, stock and financial systems with considerable autonomy
  • Excellent communicator – comfortable reporting to a remote employer via WhatsApp, video calls and written reports
  • Nairobi-based and available to start within 4 weeks

Advantageous:

  • Existing relationships with Nairobi wines and spirits distributors including Wine Router, Domaine KE or Wow Bev
  • Experience opening a new retail location from scratch
  • Knowledge of wine — WSET qualification or equivalent is a plus
  • Familiarity with cloud POS systems including SimbaPOS or Lightspeed
