The Quality Control (QC) Officer is responsible for ensuring that all stages of the biomanufacturing process—from raw material intake to final product dispatch—meet the rigorous safety, purity, and functional standards of Essential Impact. This role is central to the integrity of our large-scale fungal fermentation cycles and to maintaining compliance with international biosafety and food safety standards. As Essential scales toward commercial production, the QC Officer will also play a growing role in building and owning our food safety management system, coordinating with external analytical laboratories, and contributing to our data-driven quality culture.

Food Safety Plan & Regulatory Compliance

  • Own and maintain Essential’s HACCP-based food safety plan, 6S including hazard analysis, critical control points, monitoring procedures, and corrective action records.
  • Develop, review, and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all QC laboratory and production activities.

Incoming Raw Material & Feedstock Quality Control

  • Inspect and assess incoming feedstocks for quality parameters including moisture content, visual quality, and potential contaminants.
  • Approve or reject incoming raw material batches based on defined acceptance criteria, and maintain supplier quality records
  • Conduct or coordinate mycotoxin screening and batch-to-batch variability assessments on incoming feedstocks.

Analytical Testing & Monitoring

  • In-Process Control: Assess fungal morphology and mycelial growth patterns to confirm the culture is performing as expected at each stage of the seed train and production run, Perform real-time analysis of fermentation batches, Collect and analyse in-process samples at defined time points; escalate anomalies immediately to the production and science teams
  • Microbial Verification: Conduct regular purity checks using microscopy, plating, and molecular techniques to ensure zero contamination within the bioreactors.
  • Product Characterization: Execute analytical tests on final products, including protein concentration, moisture content, and organoleptic properties.
  • Instrumentation: Operate and maintain lab equipment, including their calibration.

Quality Systems & Compliance

  • SOP Management: Develop, review, and strictly adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all QC laboratory activities.
  • Documentation: Maintain meticulous batch records, certificates of analysis (CoAs), and non-conformance reports.
  • Regulatory Readiness: Support the facility in maintaining ISO, HACCP, and KeBS certifications.
  • Stability Studies: Coordinate and monitor shelf-life testing and stability protocols for new product iterations.

Operational Support

  • Environmental Monitoring: Oversee the cleanliness and biosafety of the production environment (Air/Water/Surfaces).
  • Supplier Quality: Validate the quality of incoming raw materials and media components.
  • Troubleshooting: Work closely with the Production Team to investigate any deviations or out-of-specification (OOS) results.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Food Science, or a related analytical field.
  • Experience: 2–4 years of experience in a QC role within a laboratory or manufacturing setting (experience in fermentation or dairy/beverage processing is highly preferred).
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in aseptic techniques and microbial culturing.
  • Hands-on experience with analytical chemistry instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with Quality Management Systems (QMS).
  • Competencies: Extreme attention to detail and a “zero-error” mindset.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, shift-based manufacturing environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

Ability to work in a laboratory and production floor environment.
Occasional handling of chemicals and biological samples under strict safety protocols.
Willingness to work flexible hours to align with fermentation harvest cycles.
