The Principal is the educational leader of the High School, responsible for bringing the ISK Mission, Vision, and Educational Aims to life for over 400 students, with the support of an Assistant High School Principal, more than 47 teachers, 19 assistants, and numerous support staff. This role entails leadership of people and program, as well as management and development of systems.

The broad areas of responsibility encompass:

  • Educational programs and re-accreditation
  • Leading in the design of mission and vision-driven learning
  • Student scheduling
  • Staff development and evaluation
  • Resource allocation
  • Community relations
  • Parent engagement

  • The leadership aspect of this role is especially important at this time of growth and development for the school. The Principal shall be part of a forward-looking and interdependent leadership team.

Leading for Learning

  • Leads and supports the implementation of the ISK Mission, Vision, and Educational Aims.
  • Cultivates a collaborative, learning community, motivating and mobilizing people for an ethos of adaptive change.
  • Has a growth mindset in support of strategic initiatives.
  • Guides assessment practices (external, internal common assessments) and communicates learning results.
  • Supervises and leads the on-going professional development of faculty focusing on informing instructional design and practices through student learning data.
  • Supports a philosophy of inclusion and the ongoing development of personalized, student-directed learning.
  • Creates collaborative partnerships in a caring environment with all stakeholder groups.
  • Has a visible, engaged presence within the high school community, among students, teachers, and parents.
  • Serves as a constructive voice and critical ear to the deliberations of the Leadership Team, advocating for matters of importance to the high school, yet making and supporting decisions in the interest of the whole school so divisional visions align.

Managing for Learning

  • Oversees the design of the high school schedule that ensures alignment of the educational program with the learning needs of students.
  • Develops and sustains open communication channels within the high school community.
  • Allocates resources (including time) productively and creatively for optimal learning.
  • Coordinates the preparation of an annual high school budget and monitors its implementation.
  • Promotes and models the use of student database and office systems effectively.
  • Problem-solves various day-to-day issues including discipline while managing personal time.
  • Ensures that high school events, trips, and activities are learning activities that support the ISK Mission, Vision, and Aims, and are conducted with due attention to student safety.
  • Recruits, supports, and supervises quality faculty and staff members that will embrace the ISK Mission, Vision, and Aims.
  • Leads a counseling team to ensure students are supported and guided to post-secondary experiences in which they will thrive.
  • It is expected that candidates for this position will be highly qualified educators able to lead a faculty in order to make a distinct improvement in the learning environment of our students.
  • Characteristics and qualifications of the ideal person for this position would include:
  • A Masters Degree in Education Administration or Leadership; Administrative Certification

Successful prior experience:

  • Of at least 10 years as a teacher, including with early adolescents
  • Of at least five years in a significant leadership role (preferably as High School Principal) in a culturally diverse international school in a developing country
  • Leading colleagues in curriculum transformation and improvement of instructional practices and innovative learning design
  • An outgoing, community-oriented, passionate, student-centered educator
  • Proficient in the use of current educational and communication technologies
  • Energetic, goal-oriented and self-motivated, with an optimistic, “can-do” approach to challenges and transformational change
  • Integrity and clarity in personal values—which must include a love of learning and valuing students as individuals
  • Adaptable, resilient with a sense of humor that appeals to a high school environment
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills of facilitating and listening, and generating ideas
  • Leading the implementation of UDL (Universal Design for Learning) and MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports)
