Job Summary
The Outpatient Ophthalmic Nurse delivers comprehensive nursing care to patients attending the eye clinic for consultations, follow-ups, minor procedures, and emergencies. As a primary clinical contact, the role involves triaging patients, conducting preliminary and diagnostic tests, supporting ophthalmologists during procedures, and promoting patient education. The position also ensures smooth clinic flow, accurate documentation, and adherence to quality care standards.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Assessment and Procedures
- Triage patients and prioritize urgent and emergency eye conditions, including trauma, sudden vision loss, and chemical injuries
- Perform preliminary ophthalmic assessments including visual acuity, pinhole testing, color vision, tonometry, and autorefraction
- Conduct diagnostic tests as required, including Schirmer’s test, corneal staining, A-scan, B-scan, OCT, and visual field testing
- Administer prescribed ophthalmic medications including eye drops, ointments, and injections
- Perform eye irrigation and assist in foreign body removal under appropriate supervision
- Assist ophthalmologists with minor procedures such as chalazion incision, suture removal, and lacrimal syringing
- Prepare and support patients undergoing clinic-based laser procedures including YAG, SLT, and PRP
Patient Education and Counseling
- Educate patients on the correct administration of eye medications and treatment adherence
- Provide counseling on management of chronic eye conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye, and allergic conjunctivitis
- Deliver pre-operative and post-operative instructions for day procedures
- Promote preventive eye care and participate in patient awareness initiatives within the clinic
Clinic Management and Quality Assurance
- Coordinate patient flow to minimize waiting times while maintaining patient privacy and dignity
- Accurately document patient information in EMR systems and relevant Ministry of Health reporting tools
- Capture and report monitoring and evaluation (M&E) data related to clinic attendance and outcomes
- Ensure adherence to infection prevention and control protocols, including hand hygiene and equipment disinfection
- Clean, disinfect, and calibrate ophthalmic equipment daily, including slit lamps, tonometers, and trial sets
- Monitor and manage stock levels of ophthalmic medications and consumables, including maintaining cold-chain requirements where necessary
- Participate in outreach activities such as school screening programs, eye camps, and community health initiatives as required
Qualifications
- Diploma or Degree in Kenya Registered Nurse (KRN) or Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse (KRCHN)
- Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya with a valid practicing license
- Higher Diploma in Ophthalmic Nursing or evidence of specialized ophthalmic training
- Minimum of 2 years’ clinical experience; experience in outpatient or ophthalmology settings (Preferred)
- Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (Preferred)
