Job Summary
The Optometrist is responsible for delivering high-quality vision care through comprehensive eye examinations, diagnosis and management of refractive errors and common eye conditions, prescription of optical devices, and timely referral of medical or surgical cases. The role contributes to improved patient outcomes, enhances patient education, and supports hospital monitoring and evaluation targets related to clinical quality and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
- Conduct comprehensive eye examinations, including patient history, visual acuity assessment, refraction, binocular vision evaluation, and ocular health assessment
- Perform diagnostic procedures such as slit lamp examination, tonometry, fundus examination, keratometry, corneal topography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and visual field testing
- Diagnose and manage refractive errors, binocular vision anomalies, low vision conditions, and other non-surgical eye conditions
- Prescribe and fit spectacles, contact lenses, and low vision aids
- Detect ocular diseases including glaucoma suspects, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, and corneal conditions, and refer appropriately for medical or surgical management
- Conduct pre-operative measurements including biometry and intraocular lens (IOL) calculations, and provide post-operative refractive assessments
- Manage emergency eye cases and co-manage patients in collaboration with ophthalmologists
Patient and Community Engagement
- Provide patient counseling on lens options, eye health, and disease prevention
- Participate in community outreach programs including school screenings, eye camps, and awareness initiatives
- Train optical technicians and provide mentorship to interns and students
Administration and Quality Assurance
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical records using electronic medical records (EMR) systems and Ministry of Health reporting tools
- Ensure proper calibration, maintenance, and safe use of optometry equipment
- Monitor optical prescriptions to ensure accuracy, quality, and patient satisfaction
- Comply with professional standards and regulatory requirements as set by relevant governing bodies
- Contribute to clinical audits, research activities, and continuous medical education (CME) programs
- Ensure adherence to hospital policies, including patient confidentiality and quality care standards
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Optometry from a recognized institution
- Registered with a recognized regulatory body with a valid practicing license
- Experience working in a hospital setting (Preferred)
- Demonstrated proficiency in both automated and manual refraction, contact lens fitting, and use of diagnostic optometry equipment
