Job Summary

The Ophthalmologist is responsible for delivering comprehensive specialist eye care, including diagnosis and management of complex ophthalmic conditions, and performing a wide range of surgical procedures. The role also involves leading clinical quality initiatives, mentoring junior staff, and contributing to hospital performance targets. The position requires adherence to professional, ethical, and regulatory standards as set by relevant medical authorities in Kenya.

Clinical and Surgical Care

  • Conduct specialist consultations for a wide range of ophthalmic conditions including cataract, glaucoma, retinal diseases, corneal conditions, pediatric ophthalmology, and oculo-plastics
  • Perform and interpret advanced diagnostic procedures including Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA), B-scan ultrasonography, gonioscopy, and corneal topography
  • Plan and perform ophthalmic surgical procedures including cataract extraction with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, glaucoma surgeries, retinal procedures, trauma repair, and minor operations
  • Provide laser treatments including YAG capsulotomy, Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), and retinal photocoagulation
  • Manage ophthalmic emergencies and inpatient cases effectively
  • Conduct comprehensive pre-operative assessments and ensure appropriate post-operative care and follow-up
  • Identify and manage surgical complications in a timely and effective manner

Leadership and Quality Assurance

  • Lead surgical teams and ensure adherence to established safety protocols including the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist
  • Supervise, mentor, and support medical officers, optometrists, ophthalmic nurses, and trainees
  • Chair or co-chair clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions
  • Develop, review, and implement clinical protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and patient care pathways
  • Participate in community outreach programs, eye camps, and public health education initiatives

Administration and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely patient records in electronic medical record (EMR) systems and theatre registers
  • Contribute to Ministry of Health (MOH) and hospital reporting requirements, including surgical volumes, clinical outcomes, and blindness prevention data
  • Support procurement processes by providing input on ophthalmic equipment, consumables, and intraocular lenses (IOLs)
  • Ensure adherence to hospital policies, patient confidentiality standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or equivalent from a recognized institution
  • Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology or equivalent qualification
  • Registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) with a valid practicing license and specialist recognition
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ post-qualification experience as an Ophthalmologist
  • Fellowship or subspecialty training in ophthalmology (Preferred)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
