Job Summary

The Laboratory Technologist is responsible for conducting a wide range of medical laboratory tests to support clinical and surgical decision-making. The role involves handling samples for pre-operative screening, infectious eye diseases, diabetes monitoring, and general health assessments. The position requires strict adherence to standard operating procedures, quality control measures, and biosafety protocols to ensure reliable results and effective patient care.

Key Responsibilities

Technical and Diagnostic

• Receive, accession, and process patient samples including blood, urine, swabs, corneal scrapings, and ocular fluids (aqueous/vitreous taps)
• Perform laboratory tests in accordance with standard operating procedures, including FBC, RBS/HbA1c, LFTs, RFTs, HIV, Hepatitis B/C, VDRL, ESR, and urinalysis
• Conduct microbiological investigations for ocular infections, including Gram stain, KOH preparation, and culture and sensitivity testing for conditions such as corneal ulcers and endophthalmitis
• Prepare and manage pre-operative screening profiles for cataract and other surgical procedures
• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment including microscopes, analyzers, centrifuges, incubators, and autoclaves
• Validate and release test results following quality checks and promptly communicate critical values to clinicians

Quality Assurance and Laboratory Operations

• Perform daily internal quality control procedures and participate in external quality assurance programs
• Ensure proper calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment, including documentation and reporting of faults
• Manage laboratory reagents and consumables, including inventory control, cold chain maintenance, and monitoring of expiry dates
• Maintain accurate records of all laboratory activities, ensuring proper documentation and traceability
• Ensure adherence to laboratory standards, regulatory requirements, and institutional policies

Administration, Training, and Support

• Maintain laboratory registers, worksheets, and accurate data entry into EMR/LIS systems
• Contribute to preparation of routine reports, including MOH 711 and internal hospital reports on laboratory utilization and disease trends
• Support training and supervision of interns, students, and support staff in laboratory procedures and safety practices
• Participate in outreach programs and eye camps, providing point-of-care testing such as RBS, HIV testing, and urinalysis
• Engage in continuous medical education (CME) and support clinical audits and research activities requiring laboratory data

Qualifications

• Diploma, Higher Diploma, or Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution
• Registration with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB) with a valid practicing license
• Practical experience in microbiology is an added advantage (Preferred)
• Demonstrated proficiency in the use of automated analyzers, microscopy, and culture techniques
