Inpatient Doctors Team Leader Job Avenue Healthcare

Responsible for leading and supervising inpatient Medical Officers, coordinating staff rosters, overseeing day-to-day inpatient care, managing patient flow and bed utilisation, coordinating multidisciplinary care, monitoring clinical quality and patient safety, supporting clinical governance, and preparing performance reports. Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Science, a valid KMPDC licence, updated BLS and ACLS/ATLS certification. The position is based in Thika and requires on-site work.

Job Objective / Purpose

Provide clinical and operational leadership for the hospital’s inpatient services and lead the inpatient Medical Officers’ team, ensuring safe, high-quality, efficient and financially sustainable care, effective patient flow and bed utilization, strong specialist and multidisciplinary coordination, and continuous improvement in clinical outcomes and patient experience.

Key Responsibilities

People Management

• Supervision & performance: lead, supervise and appraise permanent and locum Medical Officers, ensuring optimal deployment.
• Staffing & rosters: ensure adequate roster cover for Medical Officers with the MSM and HR, and coordinate specialist on-call rosters.
• Engagement & discipline: drive staff engagement and retention; manage recognition and discipline per Avenue Healthcare policies.
• Training & development: oversee internship; assess competencies and coordinate CPD and CME.

Clinical Operations

• Patient flow: oversee day-to-day inpatient care, ensuring timely assessment, treatment, specialist review, admission, transfer and discharge; monitor length of stay, delayed discharges and unplanned ICU/HDU transfers; manage DAMA cases .
• Multidisciplinary coordination: lead and conduct daily multidisciplinary ward rounds, coordinate care of complex patients with specialists, Nursing and support departments, and escalate delays in specialist review or interventions.
• Patient experience: ensure clear, timely communication with patients and families; act on feedback and complaints against agreed KPIs.
• Clinical duties: undertake clinical and on-call duties as required, and support Medical Officers in complex, deteriorating and high-risk cases.

Clinical Quality & Patient Safety

• Governance & risk: ensure safe, protocol-compliant care (IPC, medication safety, patient identification); ensure timely incident reporting and investigation; participate in clinical governance committees, RCAs, CAPAs and QIPs.
• Mortality & morbidity: ensure inpatient deaths are documented, reported and escalated, and M&M recommendations are implemented.
• Standards & documentation: develop and review inpatient protocols and clinical pathways; ensure complete, timely clinical documentation and current privileging and credentials for Medical Officers and specialists.

Performance & Financial Management

• Monitor inpatient performance against clinical, operational, financial, quality and patient-experience indicators; provide daily and periodic performance reports to the MSM and Senior Management; track inpatient revenue and work with Finance and Insurance on justification of treatment extensions and management of care within approved insurance budgets.

Governance & Compliance

• Ensure compliance with Avenue Healthcare corporate governance policies, applicable laws, and regulatory and professional standards; participate in accreditation and audit activities and implement audit recommendations; prevent, detect and report fraud, misconduct or malpractice.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in medical science
• Valid Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) licence
• Updated BLS, ACLS/ATLS certificate
• At least 3 years’ post-internship experience, including clinical leadership and supervision of clinical teams
• Postgraduate qualification in healthcare management, leadership or a related field
• Strong communication and multidisciplinary collaboration skills; patient-focused and results-oriented
