In-house Legal Counsel – Employment & Contract Specialist Job. Legal Jobs In Kenya

Reports to: Managing Partner/Director

Duties and Responsibilities

Employment Contracting & Localized Contracts

  • Drafting and reviewing employment agreements in line with local laws
  • Crafting local contracts under HRLeverage Employer‑of‑Record model to mitigate employment risk

Pan‑African Compliance Management

  • Ensuring regulatory compliance across payroll, taxation, social security (NSSF/SHIF), and benefits in the country
  • Advising on PEO/EOR statutory obligations for clients expanding into Africa.

Regulatory & Licensing Support

  • Handling legal requirements like business licensing, work permits, expatriate documentation.
  • Coordinating with local regulators to maintain compliance under Kenyan labor and tax law.

PEO/EOR Risk Mitigation

  • Drafting tailored contracts and conducting risk assessments to shield both HRLeverage and its clients from litigation

Vendor & Service Agreements

  • Drafting and reviewing SLA and service contracts with clients and vendors across its Pan‑African network.
  • Ensuring enforceable cross-border agreements abide by varying legal systems.

Advisory on Labour Law & Employment Policies

  • Providing guidance on local employment laws (e.g. Kenya’s Employment Act) as part of HR advisory services
  • Advising on policies, SOPs, employee handbooks, expatriate onboarding, and HR services.

Data Protection & Privacy Compliance

  • Advising on the application of local data protection laws

Dispute Resolution & Legal Risk Control

  • Managing or supporting labor disputes, disciplinary processes, redundancies, and terminations proactively.
  • Coordinating with local counsel within each territory as needed.

Strategic & Commercial Support

  • Supporting expansion into new African markets—e.g., setting up offices and legal entities
  • Advising on platform terms, client-facing legal documentation, and due diligence.

Policy, Training & Internal Governance

  • Collaborating with HRLeverage in developing internal governance—like compliance playbooks, ethics, whistleblower and data‑privacy policies.
  • Leading training sessions on labor law updates, data compliance, contract risk, and cross- border employment matters.

External Counsel Coordination

  • Engage with local law firms for litigation, legal opinions, and regulatory filings.
  • Manage legal budgets and monitor service delivery by external legal providers.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from a recognized university.
  • Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practicing certificate.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in employment law, corporate law, or legal advisory (in-house or law firm).
  • Experience with cross-border employment matters or PEO/EOR models is an added advantage.
  • Familiarity with data protection laws and payroll/tax compliance.
  • Strong drafting skills, attention to detail, and legal research abilities.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
