Our client is a Wildlife Conservancy organization looking to hire a Hydrology & Climate Monitoring Officer responsible for planning, implementing, and managing hydrological and climate monitoring systems to support sustainable water resource management, conservation planning, and climate resilience initiatives within the Conservancy.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Water Resource & Climate Monitoring
- Implement and oversee the water resource and climate monitoring plan, covering:
- Meteorological monitoring systems (e.g. rain gauges, weather stations)
- Hydrological monitoring systems (e.g. dams, streams, surface water flows)
- Groundwater monitoring
- Water abstraction monitoring
- Environmental and ecosystem monitoring using bio-indicators
- Ensure effective operation of the hydro-meteorological monitoring network.
- Oversee the implementation of the Conservancy Water Masterplan.
- Equipment Operation, Maintenance & Compliance
- Schedule, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot all hydro-meteorological equipment.
- Ensure monitoring activities comply with:
- Approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) requirements
- Liaise closely with the Health & Safety team to ensure field safety compliance.
- Monitor and maintain accurate records for:
- Equipment calibration and servicing
- Water-use and water infrastructure
- Field safety procedures
- Monitoring logs and asset registers
Data Management, Analysis & Reporting
- Collect, validate, analyse, and interpret hydrological and climatic data.
- Prepare regular technical reports and water-use data summaries.
- Support the preparation of annual water resource status reports for the Conservancy.
- Provide evidence-based recommendations to improve:
- Monitoring systems
- Water resource planning and management
- Climate adaptation strategies
Planning, Research & Innovation
- Integrate hydrological and climate data with GIS and remote sensing tools for enhanced data visualisation and decision-making.
- Support and contribute to applied research in areas such as:
- Groundwater, surface water recharge enhancement
- Climate resilience and adaptation
- Ecosystem hydrology
- Identify opportunities for innovation and improved monitoring methodologies.
Teamwork & Coordination
- Work closely with conservation, research, GIS, and operations teams.
- Where applicable, supervise and coordinate staff or field assistants involved in monitoring activities.
- Support capacity building and knowledge sharing within the team.
Additional Duties.
Perform other related tasks to support organizational objectives
Qualifications & Job Specifications
Academic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Hydrology/ Climate Science/Climate Monitoring/ Meteorology/ Environmental Science/ Water Resources Management /Environmental/Bio-systems/ Hydrology Engineering or any related field:
Professional Experience
- Minimum 3 years’ professional experience in:
- Hydro-meteorological network operation and management
- Hydrological or climate monitoring programmes
- 5 years’ experience leading or coordinating teams, maintaining and operating hydro-meteorological networks is an added advantage.
- Experience conducting environmental surveys using bio-indicators is desirable.
Technical Competencies
Strong competence in:
- Hydrological and climate data analysis
- Hydro-meteorological monitoring techniques
- Training or demonstrated experience in:
- GIS and remote sensing
- Hydraulic or hydrologic modelling
- Good working knowledge of data management and reporting tools.
Additional Requirements
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Good report writing and presentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and in remote field conditions.
- Strong coordination and communication skills.
- Valid driving license (field-based role).
