Human Rights Officer NGO Job United Nations
The United Nations is an intergovernmental organization to promote international co-operation. A replacement for the ineffective League of Nations, the organization was established on 24 October 1945.
Responsibilities
- Within delegated authority, the Human Rights Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
- Coordinates efforts to integrate human rights in humanitarian action and facilitate a human rights-based approach, and provides analysis and advice in line with human rights and international humanitarian law. Engages with humanitarian coordination mechanisms, including on response and preparedness planning and activities, and policy development. • Reviews, monitors and evaluates the implementation of international human rights instruments.
- Prepares relevant human rights parts of internal and external reports, including for the Human Rights Council.
- Works with UN and non-governmental programmes in the country to integrate human rights, including their gender and diversity dimensions in their programs.
- Ensures monitoring and up-to-date information regarding substantive matters in the field of human rights and humanitarian action, and makes recommendations on actions to take.
- Makes contact with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters; briefs representatives and provides, as appropriate, suggestions and recommendations.
- Assists to develop and implement training programs in the field of human rights, international law, and humanitarian action, with attention to gender perspectives.
- Serves as team leader with responsibility for carrying out, in consultation with the head of office or deputy, work coordination and administrative functions. Coordinates Country Office engagement on humanitarian action in collaboration with other teams.
- Trains and supervises new/junior staff.
- Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns, to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Education
- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, political science, international relations, social sciences or related field.
- A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
- A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law or related area is required.
- At least 2 years of field experience, including working in conflict or crisis settings, is required. Experience working in humanitarian action is desirable.
