Scope of the Role
As Finance Director, you will oversee all aspects of financial stewardship, including strategic planning, budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, treasury management, internal controls, risk management, and regulatory compliance. In this role, you will be required to build strong relationships with key stakeholders, including donors, government institutions, regulatory bodies, auditors, the regional committee and global colleagues, and enhance confidence in the organisation’s financial stewardship and accountability.
You will also provide inspiring leadership to a high -performing finance function, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement across all offices. Through effective coaching and talent development, you will strengthen the capability of the finance team and empower colleagues to achieve their full potential.
Responsibilities & Tasks:
Strategic Leadership
- Lead the development and implementation of the financial strategy in alignment with the company’s strategic goals and priorities.
- Provide leadership to the finance team to align finance management capacity with the strategic departmental plan and institutional direction.
- Advance a culture of continuous improvement by proactively rationalizing existing and introducing new reporting solutions, optimizing financial systems, and providing business solutions that align with the company’s needs and ways of working and drive objectives.
- Drive progress towards a more efficient organisational operating model and provide financial insights to drive sustainable growth, develop and deliver key initiatives that inform decision-making.
- Provide effective and timely communication of critical financial information and recommendations regarding the financial health, results, and condition of the organization, including relevant trends, forecasts, risks, and opportunities to the CEO, senior management team, and governance committees.
- Work closely with the global and regional finance team by providing timely and adequate responses and being a collaborative partner in developing organization-wide new initiatives.
- Establish meaningful relationships with stakeholders, including financial service providers, finance leadership of the company institutions, and development partners.
Financial Planning and Management
- Lead the development of the company’s budget process in coordination with department heads and the CEO. Oversee all budgeting and forecasting processes, including donor budgets, sub-agreement budgets, overall country budgets, procurement contracts, and other financial reports.
- Strengthen grant management processes and ensure alignment with organizational and donor requirements, working closely with partnership and programme leads.
- Facilitate the generation of accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial and management reports and forecasts for use by management, board, and donors. Drive consistency in data sources and reporting formats across the institution.
- Champion the consolidation of month-end close processes for all projects and analyse financial information/monthly reports on program implementation, admin (HH) funding, and provide comments on project performance versus forecast and highlight possible risks to the Management.
- Implement effective liquidity and cash flow management procedures, including regular assessment of programme and admin cash positions to ensure adequate funding and prevent the need for bridge funding.
Treasury Management:
- Provide active leadership on all institutional investments and assets by exercising control, providing timely and relevant information for decision-making, and proactively recommending solutions to complex challenges.
- Accountable for the effective, efficient, and transparent management of treasury and accounting operations across the institution. Ensure effective financial management and control, including strong systems of effective treasury management.
- Lead cash flow planning and treasury function in coordination with Programme Leads, Senior Management, and governance committees. Ensure institutional balance sheet accounts are fully reconciled.
Compliance and Governance
- Liaise with the institution’s governance bodies, including the Finance and Audit Committee, to establish institutional objectives, board meeting agendas, manage critical governance-management milestones, prepare board papers, and follow through on board-recommended actions. Through the Finance and Audit Committee, collaborate with the Internal Audit function to proactively address high-risk areas and ensure mitigation policies and practices are in place.
- Engage with External Auditors to ensure regulatory requirements are met and audit recommendations are implemented. Ensure compliance with all statutory requirements and donor regulations across the region.
- Lead the development of a risk compliance framework and mitigate financial risks by implementing robust internal controls.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business or related field
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA, ACMA, ACA, ACCA), with substantial senior-level financial experience in a major organisation – covering budgeting and forecasting, reporting, financial control, and business partnering.
- Candidates with an MBA are encouraged to apply.
- At least ten (10) years of senior-level management experience in a complex organisation, with relevant experience leading finance departments in a donor-funded organization.
- An executive leader who is willing to roll up their sleeves, lead from the front, and actively engage in both strategic and operational execution to deliver results.
- A proven ability to work confidently and competently at the senior leadership level and experience managing board relationships and requirements, including building relationships with senior leaders.
- The ability to be an excellent team player and team builder, who nurtures, develops, and unleashes the full potential of peers and reports. Outstanding sense of accountability and integrity
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to use numbers to illustrate insights and drive action.
- Demonstrated skills in integrating technology and systems to improve accounting productivity and accuracy.
- The candidate must demonstrate vast end-to-end experience in reporting and analysing financial reports.
- Board management and reporting
- Grants management
- People and workflow management. Experience managing Bilateral and multilateral grants.
- Knowledge and practical application of Tax laws on companies limited by guarantee or Public Benefit Organizations.
- Handled intercompany financial reporting and extensive reconciliations.
