Farm Veterinarian Job

Key Responsibilities:

Animal Health & Welfare

  • Diagnose, treat, and manage animal diseases across all farm species (dairy/beef cattle, pigs, sheep, horses, poultry)
  • Design, implement, and monitor vaccination and deworming programs per species
  • Maintain up-to-date animal health records and medical histories
  • Ensure compliance with animal welfare standards and veterinary regulations
  • Monitor and enforce biosecurity practices and quarantine protocols

Preventive Medicine & Health Planning

  • Develop and oversee preventive health programs, including nutritional support, hygiene protocols, and routine screening
  • Monitor feed formulations and ensure rations support animal immunity and productivity
  • Establish and maintain disease surveillance systems on the farm

Reproductive Management

  • Oversee breeding programs: heat detection, artificial insemination, pregnancy diagnosis
  • Monitor reproductive health and manage cases of dystocia, infertility, and abortions
  • Advise on livestock selection and genetic improvement strategies

Regulatory Compliance

  • Liaise with the Kenya Veterinary Board and county veterinary departments to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Maintain veterinary drug inventory and ensure proper handling, storage, and administration
  • Ensure ethical use and recordkeeping of veterinary drugs, vaccines, and antibiotics

Training & Supervision

  • Train animal handlers on basic animal care, handling, hygiene, and early disease detection
  • Provide continuous capacity building to farm staff on biosecurity and welfare standards
  • Participate in staff recruitment and performance evaluation where animal health is concerned

Research, Data & Reporting

  • Maintain detailed farm reports including morbidity, mortality, treatment success, breeding performance, and disease trends
  • Provide regular reports to farm management with data-driven insights for continuous improvement

Emergency Response

  • Be available for emergencies including calving/lambing assistance, injury management, disease outbreaks, and disaster response
  • Set up a clear emergency animal health protocol for the farm
