Objective

The objective of this consultancy is to provide strategic research support to the IKEA project on the integration of companion crops seed systems in the Vegetable integrated Push-pull and strengthening postharvest management and market linkages for products of the VIPPT system.

Methodology

The consultant will engage with scientists in the Vegetable integrated Push Pull team, design and supervise MSc students on addressing constraints to forage legume and grass seeds, their post-harvest management of seeds to ensure shelf life, seed viability, and germination. Key Deliverables

• Support the Project lead in quick recruitment of two MSc students to be engaged in Desmondium seed research by first week of August 2025.
• Engage with the MSc Students and develop and finalize research proposals on the Desmodium seed production and post-harvest management by September 2025
• Engage with the project lead and map the various products of Vegetable integrated Push Pull production systems in the target countries and develop a strategy for their effective market linkage by November 2025.
• Establish natural enemy diversity in different vegetable integrated push pull production systems in the target countries.
• Organise stakeholder consultation meetings for strengthening certification systems and market linkages for products of Vegetable integrated Push Pull January 2025.
• Successfully co-supervise the MSc studies to completion and towards publication of at least 3 publications from the MSc study by August 2025.
• Collaborate with the VIPPT team and the project lead to develop and submit research for development proposals (At least 2) on post-harvest management, seed systems enhancement, and market linkages around VIPPT.

Mandatory Requirements

• Academic qualification: Ph.D in Natural Science, Agriculture, and related fields.
• Others: Good track record in terms of publication, good understanding of the Kenyan agriculture
• stakeholder networks, resource mobilization, and student supervision.
