Community Development Intern NGO Job Water Mission

Requires an undergraduate qualification in Community Development, Social Work, Sociology, Anthropology, or a related field. The position is based in Makindu and requires regular fieldwork.

Job Summary:

The Community Development Intern will report to the Managing Director and will work closely with the Technical Officer, Customer Service Officer, and Water Mission Kenya’s Community Development Officer to identify and assess potential customers for Water Mission Waterworks and potential communities for pipeline extensions. Responsibilities will include coordinating with Safe Water Committees and WMK’s Community Development Officer to engage community members on water supply matters, working closely with technical teams to ensure community development aspects are properly addressed in project implementation, coordinating stakeholder engagement activities, and performing any other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor. This role will be based in Makindu, Kenya, with regular site visits to Kambu, Muthingini, Sultan Hamud, Mutyambua, Kinyongo, Kwa Kavisi, and other areas. This is an unpaid, non-renewable internship for a period of one (1) year. Field expenses will be covered by Water Mission Waterworks LTD.

Key Responsibilities:

• Support community mobilization, sensitization, and WASH promotion activities under the Safe Water Project.
• Assist the Customer Service Officer with processing and following up on household water connection applications.
• Participate in field assessments for new connections and routine monitoring visits.
• Work with Safe Water Committees and the Community Development Officer to identify expansion opportunities and attend related meetings/trainings.
• Support stakeholder engagement with government officials, community leaders, and water vendors to address service delivery challenges.
• Document and follow up on community concerns, complaints, and agreed action items; provide progress updates.
• Prepare meeting minutes, field reports, and other project documentation.
• Any other role as may be assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

• Completion of undergraduate program in Community development, social work, Sociology, Anthropology or any other closely related field and graduated within the last one year (2025) or awaiting graduation in 2026 (With Letter of completion from the university).

Skills and Abilities

• High level of integrity & stewardship, inspiring trust & confidence in the usage of resources.
• Smartphone and mobile data collection proficiency – uses mobile tools to record field data.
• Detail-oriented and standards-driven, with strong forward planning ability.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
• Willingness and ability to travel for fieldwork.
• Strong work ethic.
