As a professional CV writer, I’ve reviewed more than 500 CVs over the years. And if there’s one thing I’ve noticed, is that the CVs I receive today are different from the ones I used to review a few years ago, before AI became part of almost every job seeker’s toolkit.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that professionals from years ago were more qualified or more talented than the professionals we have today. The difference is in how they presented themselves.

Back then, you could almost feel a candidate’s determination through their CV. Every document had its own personality. It reflected the individual’s career journey, achievements, and aspirations, and no two CVs looked or sounded exactly alike.

Today, however, many CVs feel like they’ve all come from the same place. The wording is almost identical, and professional summaries sound the same. Even the descriptions of work experience follow the same pattern.

It’s as though everyone copied from the same script, and that creates a problem. Think about it from a recruiter’s perspective. If you’re reviewing 100 CVs and 70 of them use the same phrases, the same structure, and the same language, what reason do you have to remember one candidate over another?

The AI that most of the job seekers thought that it would help them is now making many applications look the same. When everyone uses the same tool in the same way, everyone ends up sounding the same.

Eventually, your chances of getting shortlisted become even slimmer. The candidates getting interviews aren’t necessarily the most qualified; it’s only that their CVs clearly communicate their value in a way that’s authentic, relevant, and memorable.
