How To Answer, “What Can You Offer Us That Someone Else Cannot?”
In the beauty of creation, there are no two identical people. Yes, even if they are identical twins, they have unique characters. The same case to job applicants, each certainly has something unique to offer to a potential employer that other job applicants cannot.
So how can you identify this special value and define it properly in an interview, as you connect with the job you try to get?
Interviewers typically ask this question to gain more insight into your unique characteristics, skills, and experience.
I recently sat in an interview panel and among the common questions that were asked were, “what can you offer that other candidates can’t”
The first candidate answered “I have six years of experience in this field and I have a wide understanding of the business operations of your main competitors, I know their clients, sales tactics, and what makes them stand out in the market. My track record shows my commitment to quality, with over 100 satisfied customers which are relevant to this role.”
The second candidate said, “I cannot offer much in terms of experience, I am a quick learner, but what I can assure you is that I work so hard and I hope to be considered.”
Among the candidates, who do you think impressed us more? The first one.
For you to nail this question, you are required to be well-prepared for the interview and have a thorough understanding of your skills and qualifications.
So, how can you answer this question effectively?
1. Practice The Answers Before The Interview
The first candidate seemed to have prepared well for the interview because he connected what we were looking for with his experience which gave him an advantage over other candidates.
Consider going through the job description, and common interview questions and note down the answers. Rehearse and present before friends as you ask for the feedback.
2. Focus On Your Strengths
When we were recruiting for a managerial position, we chose a candidate who had led a larger team, mentored others, and encouraged growth.
It is important to focus on the areas in which you are doing well because employers explore your unique strengths, qualifications, and traits that set you apart from the other candidates.
3. Customize Your Answer
When I was being interviewed for the role of communication and marketing executive, I researched to understand how my communication and marketing experience and skills correlated with what the employer was looking for.
It is a good idea to modify your answers to a specific role and understand the needs of the company and the role.
4. Showcase Previous Experiences
Previous experience can be defining factor because employers may require specific experience levels so when answering this question, focus on the experience that makes you a more viable candidate and the best match for the job.
The second candidate didn’t showcase the experience that was relevant to the job and he failed to convince the interview panel of what he would bring to the table.
5. Be Confident
I have seen many candidates fail an interview because their nerves got better of them and they were not able to demonstrate their suitability for the role.
Confidence is essential because it helps the interviewers to believe in what you’re saying hence it is important to practice good posture and use a confident tone of voice to show that you are fit for the role.
Finally
Understanding how to answer this question not only helps you to respond confidently but also helps you highlight the unique skills that make you a better match for the position.
